Distilled and matured at historic Green River Distilling in Owensboro, Kentucky, Wheel Horse Whiskey just announced the launch of its Barrel Master Select Series. This series marks the brand’s inaugural trip into the world of barrel proof small batch whiskey. The first release is a 5-year Kentucky Straight Bourbon.

Bottled at a potent 112.6-proof, Wheel Horse Barrel Master Select 5-Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon (also referred to as Batch 1) is a blend of twelve hand-picked barrels of 5-6-year-old Kentucky straight bourbons. This blend is non-chill filtered and known for its complex, noteworthy flavor.

According to Wheel Horse, this expression begins with a nose of cherry, mocha, and baking spices. The palate is a symphony of flavors, including sticky toffee pudding, vanilla beans, and café au lait. The finish is long, lingering, and warm, and it ends with flavors like toasted walnuts, brown sugar, and black forest cake.

“When we launched Wheel Horse in 2019 as a 101-proof brand, we set out to craft a whiskey that was bold, approachable, and versatile,” Barrel Master Stephen Corrigan says.

“We still love the 101 proof point, but there’s something undeniably exciting about uncut whiskey. With Barrel Master Select, we get to present our whiskey in its purest form, and each release will reflect the character of the barrels that make it shine.”

What is "angel's share"?
Whiskey barrels

The whiskey world is loaded with unique, unusual, and sometimes confusing terms. We’re talking about phrases like “bunghole,” “sour mash,” “wash,” and the mysterious “angel’s share.” And while we could get into all of these terms (and more), today is the day to take a deeper dive into the latter.

I’ve been writing about alcohol for almost twenty years. The first time I visited a distillery (likely in Kentucky or Tennessee, although I can’t remember), one of the first things that was explained to me when visiting the barrelhouse was the idea of the angel’s share.
