This month, the distillery will release two whiskeys in its Michter’s Legacy Series: Shenk’s Homestead Kentucky Sour Mash Whiskey and Bomberger’s Declaration Kentucky Straight Bourbon.

The two whiskeys are named after a Swiss-born Mennonite farmer named John Shenk, who founded Shenk’s Distillery in Pennsylvania in 1753. It was later renamed the Bomberger’s Distillery in the 1800s before finally being named the Michter’s Distillery in the middle of the 20th century.

Both whiskeys rely on wood science and maturation for their unique, timeless flavor profiles. This is especially true with the Bomberger’s Declaration.

“I’m so happy with the result. Once again Chinquapin barrels have contributed to the hallmark flavor of Bomberger’s Declaration,” Michter’s Master of Maturation Andrea Wilson says.

“For this year’s release we used a spectrum of different barrels constructed from wood naturally seasoned outdoors in varying cases from 18 months to 3 years to 4 years to 5 years thus changing the chemistry of the oak’s contributions during aging. The result is a bold and multi-dimensional experience to savor and enjoy.”

“I really enjoy the bold and lingering baking spice notes in the 2025 Shenk’s release. Some of it was finished in French oak toasted, but not charred barrels crafted from wood grown in the Vosges forest, and this helped to accentuate the character of the rye in this whiskey,” Michter’s Master Distiller Dan McKee says.

This popular brand either releases a whiskey outright or finishes it in a unique barrel before launching it. Its most recent release is high-proof Kentucky straight bourbon. But not only is the whiskey itself noteworthy, so too is the innovative, eye-catching bottle it’s housed in.

Does whiskey go bad? Here’s how to spot the signs
Finally learn how and why whiskey goes bad
Pouring a glass of whiskey

The craft of making whiskey (single malt Scotch whisky, bourbon, Irish whiskey, or any other type) is highly elaborate. It’s a time-consuming process of mashing grain, fermenting the mash, distilling the liquid, and then maturing it in wood barrels. The ingredients and method are different depending on the type of whiskey. But one thing is guaranteed with any whiskey distilled worldwide: it will be sold and stored in a bottle.

This brings us to one crucial question: Does whiskey go bad? In my more than two decades of writing about alcohol and sampling countless whiskeys, I have found that it definitely does. But there are a variety of causes, and they are usually created by the alcohol consumer and not the distiller.
