This month, the distillery will release two whiskeys in its Michter’s Legacy Series: Shenk’s Homestead Kentucky Sour Mash Whiskey and Bomberger’s Declaration Kentucky Straight Bourbon.

The two whiskeys are named after a Swiss-born Mennonite farmer named John Shenk, who founded Shenk’s Distillery in Pennsylvania in 1753. It was later renamed the Bomberger’s Distillery in the 1800s before finally being named the Michter’s Distillery in the middle of the 20th century.

Both whiskeys rely on wood science and maturation for their unique, timeless flavor profiles. This is especially true with the Bomberger’s Declaration.

“I’m so happy with the result. Once again Chinquapin barrels have contributed to the hallmark flavor of Bomberger’s Declaration,” Michter’s Master of Maturation Andrea Wilson says.

“For this year’s release we used a spectrum of different barrels constructed from wood naturally seasoned outdoors in varying cases from 18 months to 3 years to 4 years to 5 years thus changing the chemistry of the oak’s contributions during aging. The result is a bold and multi-dimensional experience to savor and enjoy.”

“I really enjoy the bold and lingering baking spice notes in the 2025 Shenk’s release. Some of it was finished in French oak toasted, but not charred barrels crafted from wood grown in the Vosges forest, and this helped to accentuate the character of the rye in this whiskey,” Michter’s Master Distiller Dan McKee says.

Clase Azul

There are very few tequila brands with more eye-catching bottles than Clase Azul. The popular brand’s newest expression is no exception. It’s called Clase Azul Tequila Blanco Ahumado. It’s the latest addition to the portfolio, joining the brand’s five tequilas and three mezcals.

This artisanal tequila begins with Blue Weber agave hearts that are baked in a traditional oven made by digging a pit in the ground and lighting wood and volcanic rocks. After baking, the agave is shredded, and the juice is fermented and combined with the brand’s proprietary yeast. It’s then double-distilled in copper pot stills, resulting in a memorable tequila that will make you rethink the depths of flavor that blanco tequila can contain.

We're finally seperating fact from fiction when it comes to tequila

Tequila might be the Rodney Dangerfield of spirits. Oftentimes (especially compared to whiskey), it gets "no respect." This is likely because of a mixture of misconceptions, myths, and experiences during your college years. I'll admit that two decades ago, when I first started writing about alcohol, I had some preconceived notions about the Mexican-made spirit. And it had a lot to do with my experiences surrounding the agave-based spirit when I was in my twenties.

I know I'm not the only one who spent a portion of their drinking years without fully embracing tequila. Many drinkers only think of this hard alcohol as a shooter paired with lime and salt or as the base for turbo-charged Margaritas. That's a shame. Tequila is a versatile, complex spirit.

Old Forester

Fans of the timeless Manhattan cocktail know that it isn't finished until it's garnished with a cherry or two. However, if you're taking the time to include a high-quality rye whiskey or bourbon, sweet vermouth, and Angostura bitters, you don't want to use cloyingly sweet, generically red maraschino cherries.

You need a high-quality, flavorful cherry for your cocktail. Especially if a renowned bourbon distillery makes it. Luckily, the folks at Old Forester have you covered. That's because the iconic brand recently announced the launch of the perfect complement to your go-to whiskey cocktail: Old Forester Cocktail Cherries.
