Met Gala 2025 promises to be a historic celebration of style and culture with “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” Expect an exhibition that traces the rich, complex legacy of Black menswear across three centuries. From the bold aesthetics of streetwear, intricate, expensive accessories, and Black dandyism to the tailored suits of the Harlem Renaissance and civil rights movement — symbols of creativity and political agency — this journey even delves into the origins of Black menswear as an imposed uniform for servants and enslaved people.

Prepare to be inspired by a narrative of resilience, reinvention, and the transformative power of fashion, redefining what it means to dress with purpose and pride. Under the working title, “Tailored for You,” guests are expected to embrace suits tailored to the nines, dynamic proportions, and personalized luxury, taking cues from previous eras and making a statement all their own. Here, we provide a comprehensive overview of what to expect from the upcoming Met Gala 2025.

A historic exploration of Black sartorial legacy

The Met Gala 2025 Superfine: Tailoring Black Style exhibition marks a pivotal moment in fashion history, becoming the Costume Institute’s first menswear-focused showcase in over two decades. Drawing inspiration from Dr. Monica L. Miller’s seminal 2009 work, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, the exhibition presents a powerful narrative of how Black communities have transformed clothing into instruments of cultural expression and social change.

Visitors will journey through centuries of sartorial innovation, from the meticulously tailored garments of 18th-century Black freedmen to the bold statements of Harlem Renaissance zoot suits, culminating in contemporary masterpieces from today’s most influential Black designers. This carefully curated collection of clothing, photographs, and artifacts demonstrates how menswear has served as armor and artistry throughout Black history.

Expect to see accessories become an even bigger part of the conversation than the norm — statement hats, canes, brooches, and scarves will be incorporated to weave together a compelling story.

With a theme so bold, there will be a few notable designers eager to throw their own spin on the theme and make the night come alive. Willy Chavarria is one creative director known for sculptural silhouettes and daring proportions, and Raul Lopez of LUAR is another designer who will inevitably have a few guests featured from his illustrious creations. Grace Wales Bonner is expected to deliver with her own unforgettable interpretations, and as always, Thom Browne will be front and center in challenging traditional tailoring codes to produce a singular vision.

With May fast approaching, fashion enthusiasts are wondering how these creative forces will put their own spin on the theme. Currently considered one of the best dressed men in Hollywood, Colman Domingo will undoubtedly create a fervor with his penchant for bold silhouettes and a liberal use of color.

Lewis Hamilton is known for his avant-garde ensembles, while A$AP Rocky’s approach to the night is anyone’s guess. These co-chairs and attendees will raise the bar for menswear on fashion’s biggest night and create a new cultural milestone in the celebration of Black sartorial expression.

By focusing on Black menswear and its contributions across generations, the Met Gala has transformed this yearly event into a cultural phenomenon and landmark. Attendees will discover the Black experience through clothing — from Reconstruction tailcoats and Harlem Renaissance zoot suits to today’s tailored creations occupying space on runways. Each of these sartorial interpretations will finally place Black fashion in the canon and show how Black aesthetics have evolved, challenged, and reconstituted international style norms.

The “Tailored for You” dress code invites and humbly requests that attendees honor the legacy and rich traditions by commemorating the earliest visionaries in the fashion industry to the current creative directors making waves today. Met Gala 2025 presentation proves that the event continues to be a driving force and is cognizant of the power of Black fashion on a global scale.

I tested Oakley’s Sphaera sunglasses in 90-degree heat—here’s what surprised me
These Oakley sunglasses made my brutal summer runs actually enjoyable
Oakley Sphaera

I stepped out into the 90+ degree heat for a training run, the world appearing in 4K-like clarity. As I pressed start on my watch and settled into an easy pace, I was also testing Oakley's latest performance eyewear: the Oakley Sphaera sunglasses.
They're a design that blends sport performance with sculptural forms. I evaluated the Sphaera for function and style through summer hill repeats, country drives, and casual settings. While I expected good things from an Oakley design, the Sphaera left me surprised in a few ways.
Oakley Sphaera: Behind the design

Before I tried the sunglasses, I spoke with Nick Garfias, VP of Design at Oakley, to learn more about the thinking behind the Sphaera.
(Note: Interview edited for content and clarity)
The Manual: What was the goal when you started out? What were you trying to create?
Nick Garfias: Obviously, this is a sports frame, and I think in this case, this is an interesting one. We don't just attack a program and say we're going to make a frame for cycling, we're going to make a frame for running.
A lot of what we do is lean into a program or one aspect of a sport, going back and forth between athletes and understanding what their needs are, and taking all that information and putting it into boxes that we find are priorities for this frame.
We asked everyday athletes, and a lot of them had a lot to do with...frames that gave them this feeling of being serious, but not over the top. So we've got a very strong DNA and very sculptural quality to it. But what they were asking for was something that gave them more confidence and not necessarily that aggressive kind of look that we traditionally have.
TM: Oh, a little more subtle.
NG: A little more subtle, yeah. And so when you look at Sphaera, it has a very simplistic continuity across the top. From one end of the stem through the brow to the other side is just one continuous look. The lens itself provides a lot of field of view.
So it's kind of maximizing the left and right field of view and then the lower field of view, which would be as you put the frame on, it's what you're looking through, right?
And the objective for that is that you can put something on, and there's so much aperture or so much lens space that you can't read the edges of the lens. So it feels seamless, and it feels lightweight.
TM: What athletes, from what sports, did you use for the design?
NG: We looked at a lot of runners. We looked at a lot of cyclists. We didn't specifically hone in onto one sport. We even looked at soccer players. A lot of the function was about the aesthetic — and not the aesthetic just to look cool, but the aesthetic of giving that athlete confidence to wear something and feel that they were being taken seriously.
TM: What sets the Sphaera apart from designs from other brands? What makes this better?
NG: We're an optics company, so our lenses are superior. This is a piece of eyewear made to protect you from debris, the sun, all kinds of things. But also, fit and retention are very important. And so, when you put these on, you'll notice it's very weightless. Because the distribution of the tension in it feels like distributed around your head evenly.
Oakley Sphaera specs:
