Let’s face it, cans are king when it comes to summertime portable potables. Half the places you go (beaches, pools, et cetera) don’t allow glass and, well, you’d frankly just look like an alcoholic if you pulled out a plastic handle of Old Crow at the city pool.
Adult canned drinks, though, are versatile. You can throw them in a cooler and when you’re done you crush’em and recycle them. Go in with weight, come out feeling great. The majority of what comes in cans, though, is beer. While there is nothing wrong with beer, sometimes you want something a little different. There are hard sodas and hard seltzers, but even then, sometimes you’re still left wanting more.
Thankfully, a number of companies have put out ready-to-drink products over the last few years to assuage that need for portable booze. From wine to rye, there’s a little bit for everyone. Check out some of our favorites below.
From the people behind Scrappy’s Bitters come their new line—Half Seas Sparkling Cocktails. While they have three flavors in total (Daiquiri and Paloma being the other two), the Bramble is a throwback to the original drink of the 1980s, and our choice of the three as it offers crisp gin flavor that mixes well with the berry and lemon, which are all brought together by the slight bit of carbonation. At only 12% alcohol, these will get you where you need to be without feeling terrible after.
This 8% ABV sparkling rosé in a can is made by FitVine, whose motto is “We crush grapes, you crush life.” If that doesn’t get you pumped to crush a few cans of this wine that’s been infused with cucumber and raspberry, I don’t know what will. The taste is only slightly sweet—the cucumber and the raspberry do well to make this an easy sipper while still maintaining a good body of flavor.
If you missed out on the cachaça rage that enveloped everyone around the time of the Olympics last year, never fear, you still have time to jump on the train. Novo Fogo Cachaça has taken the signature drink of Brazil and put it in canned form, adding a little carbonation along the way. The result is a fresh and refreshing 11.1% ABV cocktail that you can drink all afternoon long.
We love whiskey. You know this, we know this. We also love when things that pack a punch come in tiny cans. It makes us feel like giants. Slow & Low’s Rock & Rye cans are portable versions of their Rock & Rye, a sweetened rye drink popular a century ago and was made to mask the off flavors of bad whiskies. There are no off flavors here, though, just pure deliciousness. Be warned, the cans may be small, but each one packs a 45% ABV punch.
This last one isn’t so much a refresher as a hair of the dog. We’ve all been there. Hungover, needing something to jump start the day, but you’re just too damn lazy to make a Bloody Mary. On top of that, you have to meet at the beach in an hour. Made with Cutwater Spirits’ Fugu Vodka and their own Bloody Mary mix, this is the way to go (especially at 10% ABV—it’ll ease you into the day).
