To celebrate World Oceans Month, Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines have collaborated with Lonely Whale on the short film, Seaweed Stories. During June, the inflight film will delve into the potential for marine plants to address plastic pollution and help ocean ecosystems thrive. The film includes narration by Forest Whitaker, with directorial duties handled by Jake Sumner.
Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines show their commitment to the environment

Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines each have a history of sustainability initiatives. Alaska worked with Lonely Whale in 2018 on the #StrawlessSkies initiative, which eliminated single-use plastic stir straws and citrus picks onboard. The two organizations collaborated again in 2019 for the #FillBeforeYouFly campaign, which encouraged passengers to fill a water bottle before boarding, helping reduce the use of single-use plastics.
Hawaiian Airlines also works toward reducing waste, including its current initiative to phase out single-use plastics onboard. The airline also just launched a carbon-neutral amenity kit, comprised of recycled and recyclable materials.
Passengers viewing Seaweed Stories can look forward to a vibrant tale on the wonders of seaweed. The film’s website previews the story’s contents:
As the ocean faces the triple threat of plastic pollution, biodiversity loss, and climate change, innovators are turning to nature for solutions, harnessing the power of seaweed to help solve these challenges. Seaweed Stories includes insights from a Silicon Valley startup creating plastic alternatives from macro-algae, to the Indigenous Shinnecock Kelp Farmers using seaweed to prove their sovereign right to coastal land, and a scientist in South Korea supporting seaweeds’ sexual reproduction to create new species that can withstand the effects of a changing climate. These nature-based solutions address plastic pollution and help restore and preserve marine ecosystems.
