When it comes to epic summer road trips, most people think of California’s coastline or the wide-open highways of Texas. But the top spot for summer road trips this year? It’s Minnesota.
According to WalletHub’s latest ranking, Minnesota edged out all 50 states thanks to its winning combo of affordability, safety, and non-stop summer fun. The Land of 10,000 Lakes is a dream for outdoor lovers, with some of the country’s highest spending on parks and recreation and the third-most fairs and festivals per capita. Translation: there’s always something cool happening.
It’s also one of the safest states to hit the road. Minnesota boasts the third-lowest vehicle fatality rate, top-notch bridge quality, and drivers who don’t have a need for speed (seriously, they’re among the least likely to speed). Plus, road-tripping here won’t break the bank, thanks to low camping and hotel costs.
Coming in second is New York, but don’t just think of the Big Apple. The entire state is packed with attractions, restaurants, and some of the country’s most iconic historic landmarks. From Niagara Falls to the Hudson Valley, you could spend weeks exploring.
Rounding out the top three is Ohio, a surprise gem for road-trippers. Ohio is home to legendary amusement parks like Cedar Point, countless zoos and botanical gardens, and a jam-packed summer festival calendar.
