Honda inspires hardcore campers to DIY their very own CR-V Dream Pod concept

Like Japan's capsule hotels, this concept SUV packs most of the comforts of home into its pint-sized cabin

Stock minivans and campervans make easy donor vehicles for DIY vanlifers. But SUVs, especially small to mid-sized models, aren’t often a starting point for most custom van builds. Now, Honda wants camping enthusiasts to rethink what’s possible with more ordinary “grocery-getter” SUVs. Introducing the Honda CR-V Dream Pod camper concept.

The Japanese automaker released the one-off concept to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Honda’s popular CR-V SUV. While the exterior remains unchanged, the interior pulls heavy inspiration from Japan’s well-known capsule hotels. Despite a significantly smaller floor plan than, say, a typical campervan, Honda managed to pack a surprising amount of creature comforts into the CR-V’s pint-sized cabin.

At the heart of the Dream Pod is the EGOE Nestboard 650, an in-car camping setup that fits the CR-V perfectly. A built-in drawer at the base of the EGOE contains a portable camp stove, a collapsible sink/wash basin, and enough storage for all your favorite camp kitchen essentials. After dark, the rear seats fold flat, and a double mattress unfurls to provide sleeping quarters for two adults. Black-out rear window covers and a retractable blind behind the front seats add plenty of privacy. Plus, Honda’s DIY shopping list includes integrated “tech pods” with pull-out side tables, LED reading lights, and USB sockets to make the whole setup more livable.

The Dream Pod is based on Honda’s off-the-rack CR-V e:PHEV, a plug-in hybrid model available exclusively in Europe. The platform offers an all-electric range of roughly 50 miles, allowing for completely silent drives through the front- and backcountry. Plus, it comes standard with 6.25 inches of ground clearance and advanced traction control. Those aren’t hardcore, “overlanding-ready” specs by any stretch, but they add a degree of versatility to allow for on- and (light) off-road adventuring.

Honda built the CR-V Dream Pod as a one-off concept. But, car camping enthusiasts can DIY their own build with the car maker’s complete shopping list.

Runaway Campers’ Venturist is a rugged “squaredrop” towable for minimalists
With more than 20 inches of ground clearance, this hardcore teardrop trailer has serious off-roading potential
Runaway Campers Venturist travel trailer being towed by an SUV over rocky terrain.

I'm of the school of thought that "simpler is almost always better," especially when it comes to camping. Whether it's backpacking, RV camping, or overlanding, less is often more. It's clear that Runaway Campers agrees. Case in point: It's perfectly minimalist Venturist "squaredrop" travel trailer series.

Each of the three models in the Venturist series (or "V-Series") comes standard with everything avid overlanders need and nothing they don't. That means a steel frame construction, Timbren axle-less independent suspension, electric brakes, custom fenders, and 17-inch wheels on 33-inch BFG all-terrain tires. The setup provides more than 20 inches of ground clearance. Coupled with a pint-sized footprint, this travel trailer is purpose-built to be easy to tow and maneuver along even the tightest and gnarliest of backcountry trails.

Aterra Slide-In truck camper transforms your pickup into an overland-ready rig
Get the DIY shell with only the essentials or upgrade to a full-blown, ready-to-overland ride
AT Overland Equipment's Aterra Slide-In truck camper parked in a campsite.

For our money, there's no better solution for overlanding than a classic truck camper. Now, Arizona's AT Overland Equipment has just debuted an all-new slide-in solution that perfectly balances weight, features, and price.

The Aterra Slide-In is the latest addition to AT Overland Equipment's Aterra series. It's designed for maximum versatility and customizability for full-sized pickup owners who want a truck camper that's exactly as dialed-in as they need it to be. The base model is merely a lightweight (roughly 750 pounds) shell — a blank canvas, if you will — designed to be the perfect starter for your DIY build. The surprisingly spacious interior offers a 6'9" standing height and a few essentials, like an RV King-sized sleeping area with a mattress, dual-pane Tern Windows, and a locking Tern rear entry door. It's all well-insulated with an R6 value and R7 for the roof.

Rumpl Wrap Sack is the Goldilocks “un”-sleeping bag you never knew you needed
It offers the warmth and comfort of a traditional 20° sleeping bag with the versatility of a camp quilt
Young camper tucking into a Rumpl Wrap Sack sleeping bag inside a rooftop tent.

It wasn't until fairly recently that I discovered the joys of swapping my traditional sleeping bag for a camp quilt, but I've never looked back. Especially for car camping and overlanding, the latter is infinitely more versatile and comfortable for the way I sleep. But Rumpl's Wrap Sack is a clever, new "un"-sleeping bag that has my attention.

The Wrap Sack is shaped like an ordinary sleeping bag, but that's really where the similarities end. Rumpl designed it to be far more versatile thanks to its clever WrapAdapt system. Campers can opt to wrap and zip themselves inside the two built-in layers for cold-weather outings or unzip and completely "de-layer" when the temperature heats up. With a 20-degree rating, the Wrap Sack works well as a three-season bag, so it's good for all but the coldest camping trips. The design accommodates campers up to 6'2" and is wider and roomier than old-school mummy sleeping bags, making it great for anyone (me!) who hates feeling like a tightly swaddled newborn while sleeping. Plus, thanks to an integrated pillow pocket, it's purpose-built to pair with Rumpl's own Camp Pillow.
