Ford Bronco gets its first-ever, fully integrated pop-up rooftop camper tent

It's lighter, more streamlined, and better integrated than (almost) every other rooftop tent on the market.

Since its debut five years ago, the latest-gen Ford Bronco has taken its place alongside the Jeep Wrangler and Toyota 4Runner as one of the greatest overlanding rigs. The problem is that, until now, no one has developed a fully integrated rooftop camping solution. Enter: Ursa Minor’s all-new B30 pop-up camper tent.

The B30 is a fairly straightforward swap of the Bronco’s factory hard- or soft-top for a fully customized, camp-focused alternative. It features a wedge-style tent with a manual, scissor opening that works with the assistance of an integrated strut system for rapid deployment. Inside, campers will find a two-inch-thick double mattress with a sizable sleep space measuring 86 x 49 inches. A more luxurious, three-inch camp mattress is available as an upgrade. The big win here — and the reason Bronco owners might consider the B30 over an “ordinary” rooftop tent — is the ability to move seamlessly between the vehicle’s interior and sleeping quarters. It solves the inconvenience of having to climb down your tent’s ladder (outside, sometimes in the middle of the night) to dig around in your rig for a toothbrush, a pullover, an extra pillow, etc.

This isn’t Ursa Minor’s first foray into integrated vehicle rooftop camping solutions. The Oregon-based brand’s history dates back to 2007, when it began heavily customizing the OG Honda Element to be a legit camping rig. Since then, it’s worked out similar solutions for the four-door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (both JL and JK) and the Ford Transit Connect.

The B30 is essentially a heavily adapted version of Ursa’s Jeep-centric J30 rooftop camper. But its more streamlined, adding just seven inches to the height of a stock Bronco, compared to 10 inches on the Wrangler model. That means a total roof height of just 80 inches for a base model four-door Bronco — plenty low enough to fit into a standard U.S. garage. Of course, if you’re rolling in a lifted Bronco, you might need to rethink your storage solution. The biggest surprise is how little the B30 adds to the Bronco’s curb weight. At just 165 pounds, it’s lighter than many of the largest rooftop tents on the market. Bottom line: It’s a lighter, more streamlined, and better integrated rooftop camping solution than pretty much every other RTT available today. But, of course, the best overlanding gear rarely comes cheap …

Sadly, the B30 is only available for four-door Ford Bronco models, so two-door owners are out of luck for now. Ursa Minor says it has no plans to build a solution for the more compact Bronc either. The good news is that the B30 rooftop camper setup is available now with a starting price of $11,500. That’s before shipping and installation fees (the latter will run you around $700 if done at Ursa’s Portland area facility). A long list of options — for things like awning mount points, lighting, electric outlets, color-matching, etc. — is available for a fee, of course.
