5 Best Okie Breweries According to an Oklahoma Craft Beer Expert

The insanely diverse world of craft beer is often broken down into individual regional scenes. Veteran beer havens like Asheville, North Carolina, and Portland, Oregon, are bursting at the seams with exciting breweries pushing the envelope. States like Texas and Georgia are seeing a boom in activity thanks to a loosening of laws that formerly restricted craft brewers.

One of the regions experiencing a renaissance is Oklahoma. While craft beer wouldn’t be possible without brewers and investors, fan support is ultimately responsible for the growth and longevity of a scene. Brian Welzbacher is the proprietor of BeerisOK.com and OklahomaCraftBeer.com, hosts the Oklahoma Craft Beer Podcast. Needless to say, he knows his stuff.

Brewing out of Midwest City the past four years, Roughtail Brewing Co. has produced aggressively hoppy beers from the beginning that I’d put up against any national craft brand. Their double IPA Hoptometrist has a well-balanced malt character with West Coast citrusy and resinous hops that won’t overload your palate. Everything Rhymes with Orange is a hazy, unfiltered IPA made predominantly with Simcoe hops and backed up by Citra and Mosaic that has helped lead them to expansion into Texas and Kansas.

American Solera

We are pretty spoiled to have two brewing operations by world-renowned brewer Chase Healy. His American Solera project harkens back to when he first started Prairie Artisan Ales. Oak foeders dominate his expanded brewhouse, and his unique yeast cultures have turned out hazy IPAs, roasty maple stouts, and sour wild ales. His fruited series of beers are a welcome surprise in every sip.

A retired airline engineer turned a home brewing hobby into a rather successful business, focusing on beers he enjoys drinking at home or on the golf course. Sound familiar? It may resonate with most other start-ups, but Elk Valley Brewing has a keen sense when it comes to making quaffable beers like Pale Ale and Par 3 session IPA. [Elk Valley] also made quite an impression on the national beer scene, using locally sourced spirit barrels from Scissortail Spirits to age brews like Pumpion.

Tulsa’s first major production brewery produces some of the cleanest and well-crafted German style ales and lagers. Since its ability to sell from the taproom, I have enjoyed so many new beers. like Marshall Brewing Co.’s highly drinkable Kolsch and Dunkel, as well as new Side Notch IPA, a slightly hazy spin on their Arrowhead Pale Ale. This fall, their El Cucuy Black IPA has me over the moon with roasty, caramel malts balanced by dry-hopping with floral and citrusy hops.

Another well-engrained brewery in Oklahoma City, COOP runs the gamut of beers, from its Mexican lager Horny Toad to the Territorial Reserve bourbon barrel series of wheat wines, barleywines, and imperial stouts. This year, its ever popular 13-percent Belgian dark ale DNR gets barrel treatment with the Cask-It series that features brandy barrel aged with cherries, and most recently a rye barrel aged version that entices the palate with fig and dark fruits and impressive barrel presence.

Breckenridge Brewery Celebrates Shark Week With Very Jaw-some Beer

As the world gets ready to tune in to the Discovery Channel for yet another year of Shark Week, an unlikely brewery is releasing a special beer to celebrate the annual week of shark-focused viewing.
Breckenridge Brewery, in the land-locked state of Colorado, is releasing Cherry JAW-some on July 28, just in time for this year’s Shark Week. Cherry JAW-some is a “salted cherry lime session sour.”
With its cherry lime flavor, Cherry JAW-some has a red hue that brings to mind the gory shark attack scenes from the annual TV extravaganza, and a subtle salty finish “as a nod to the ocean.”
Not only is the beer giving a nice nod to Shark Week with a perfect pairing for when you're on the couch enjoying the annual week-long marathon, it’s also supporting those sharks.
A dollar from each pint or crowler of Cherry JAW-some that's sold will head to Project Aware, a marine conservation non-profit. Breckenridge certainly seems to be all about the Great Outdoors, as earlier this summer the brewery announced a campaign to support U.S. National Parks.
Breckenridge will be hosting Shark Week watch parties at its locations in Denver and Breckenridge. Breckenridge will also host a warp-up party on August 4 at its Farmhouse in Littleton. The party will include mechanical shark rides, a shark cage experience raffle, Cherry JAW-some and, of course, Shark Week on the TVs.
For those who have been living under a rock (but most certainly not a pineapple under the sea, as you would most likely be even more aware of sharks and shark-related items and culture) Shark Week is a pop-culture staple that helps spread ocean awareness and the pure awesomeness of the shark. For the past 31 years, Discovery Channel has aired myriad programs about one of Earth's most misunderstood characters.
With programming like “Air Jaws,” “How Jaws Changed the World,” “Nuclear Sharks,” “Sharks vs. Dolphins: Face Off,” and “Expedition Unknown: Megalodon,” there's a little something for everyone, even if you don't care all that much for sharks.  Shark Week also has plenty of celebrity buy-in, with shows featuring stars like Michael Phelps (remember when he sort of raced a shark?), Ronda Rousey, Jimmy Buffett, and Guy Fieri all participating in years past.

Boulevard Brewing Brings Tech N9ne’s Caribou Lou to Life as a Craft Beer

When two employees at Boulevard Brewing Company thought about brewing a beer for American rapper Tech N9ne, they took matters into their own hands and reached out.  To their surprise, the rapper’s label company, Strange Music, got back to them soon after and they roped in hip hop fan and Boulevard digital marketing manager Pat Mullin to help get the full brewery on board.
“As soon as I heard about it, I made it my goal to see it through and make it happen,” Mullin said. “It was a long process.”

Before too terribly long, however, a meeting of the minds was held and Tech N9ne was visiting the Boulevard brewery and it was time to determine what beer to make.
“We all knew we wanted to make a homage to Caribou Lou, his signature drink, what better than to play off of it,” Mullin said.
