Worn Out Wednesday – Andy Paltos

Today we speak to the Head Menswear Designer of ROLLA’S, Neuw and A Brand:

I was born and raised in Melbourne, Australia.

Recommended Videos

Melbourne is like the slightly unfortunate looking sister in comparison to her prettier sibling Sydney, however Melbourne has a much better personality with a cooler album collection and can dress ;) … Melbourne is black Sydney is blonde.

I have been working in design for just over 20 years – I started off as a graphic designer at 18 and then moved into textile design and silk painting then followed my heart strings into denim and youth apparel. I have designed denim for companies both great and small. I am a self confessed vintage collector and hoarder freak, I literally have hundreds and thousands of denim jeans & jackets / band tees / skate tee’s / skateboards etc. and I’m also a muscle car nut. I built my 65 GT Fastback Mustang when I was 19 and still have the same beast today, it’s my friend and life long companion steed ;)

I am currently the senior menswear designer at Melbourne based denim company Threebyone – ROLLA’S is one of three brands I look after and is held nearest and dearest to me because it is my partner (Sarah) and I’s little jean creation come to life (apart from the baby we just had – yes we are a ‘designer couple’. After spending the last decade working for big global denim brands I really wanted to work on something that was smaller and closer to my heart. ROLLA’S embodies the laid back personality, sexuality and love for jeans of the place where it was born – Australia. From 80s photographers, to skateboarding and pub rock bands, it is a balance of my (and Sarah’s) personal experiences and modern lifestyle. The focus is on simple details and clean lines. It’s all about the look, the fit and keeping it simple.

As for my personal style:

Jeans:

I literally have hundreds of pairs of vintage and new jeans as it is part of my job. Obviously I wear my own brand, but I also like Acne and old Helmut Lang – both brands are simple and classic, yet modern and stylish.

Shirts:

I love vintage printed patterned shirts, I think it is a hangover from my textile design days. I always admired Aussie rocker Nick Cave’s patterned printed shirts. I also have a thing for old denim shirts, when I left Wrangler I was lucky enough to be gifted Steve McQueen’s 1952 27MW denim shirt.

Pants:

I’m not really a pants kinda guy…it’s all about the jeans!

Suits:

I love a velvet suit. Saint Laurent, Acne or vintage. I like to mix and match vintage with new.

Shoes:

I alternate between RM Williams boots and Blundstone boots. I’m definitely a boot guy more so than trainers. My favorite would probably be my RM Williams custom made black suede boots. Who would of thought that the humble Australian work boot Blundstone would now be sold in Opening Ceremony as a high end fashion piece…fashion moves in mysterious ways….

Accessories:

I like a good hat, mine are all vintage. I recently picked up a great one at Assembly store in New York.

 Outerwear:

Vintage denim, old fitted suit jackets and leather jackets have always been me. I have a ton of old customized denim and leather jackets, my favorites are a 60s Perfecto Schott one star I picked up in Japan, an original black leather T-Birds jacket from the movie ‘Grease’ I bought from an old costume designer in LA and all of my customized denim jackets are my favorites I love them all! The jackets date from the 1950s through to the 1980s.

Favorite Cologne:

Comme des Garçons BLACK

Your favorite App:

Probably good old ‘Shazam‘…old school I know but it’s great for helping to find new music.

Favorite piece of technology:

My car- a 65 GT Fastback Mustang. It’s 50 years old this year but it’s still a technological piece of beauty in my eyes.

Next tech purchase:

A 1985 Beo Center Bang & Olufsen beat box

Huckberry figured out the transition jacket with help from Relwen Clothing
Midwest ruggedness for every man
Relwen yellow pullover

Getting yourself a good coat is the perfect way to spend the winter cozied up and protected from the cold. Getting yourself the right fabrics in the summer is the best way to keep yourself cool and your clothing breathable during the sweltering summer. But what about the months in between? Fall and spring are notorious for their cold mornings and warm afternoons. The rise from coat weather to sweaty weather means you have a dire need for a transition wardrobe, and in particular, a great light jacket. Huckberry is one of our favorite brands for the rugged masculine aesthetic, and they figured out how the transition jacket should be with the help of Relwen outerwear.
Relwin sends the message for us to "be lasting"

They got their start in the open fields of the Midwest and still call Columbus, Ohio, their home today. The fields, agricultural farms, and hard-working spirit of America’s heartland give Relwen their motto, “Be lasting.” Like any farm equipment you look at today, there is a purposeful mix between the old ways of doing things and technological innovation. For Relwen, heritage isn't forgotten or sacrificed for the sake of tomorrow's fashion. Instead, it is weaved into classics like canvas jackets, quilted coats, and waxed blazers to give their entire collection a lived-in and worked-in feel. If you need a light jacket, the standout of this collection is the Quilted Insulator Tanker Jacket. And if you need something lower profile, the Heritage Trap Blazer would be your go-to all season long.

Iconic American bootmaker Nicks Boots branches out with new jackets
The work boot legend is keeping more than your feet warm
Nicks Boots Ranchman

For years, the legend of Nicks Boots has been growing exponentially. While they are known for their high-quality and durable boots, their legend grows in part due to disasters. Six of the twenty worst wildfires in the last decade have taken place in the American West, and Nicks Boots has been the choice of the men who fought them. The Hot Shot is the choice of the National Fire Protection Agency, which has adorned the feet of firefighters for years. They are also the choice for military, law enforcement, blue-collar workers, and men who love a rugged hobby boot. But they are not simply keeping your feet warm any longer. Launching Nicks Boots outerwear allows the company to keep you warm and dry whether you are in the field or escaping civilization for a weekend away.
Tough enough for work, stylish enough for play

There isn't a better companion to a rugged hobby boot or durable workboot than a coat to match it stylistically and in functionality. They offer three coats: The Patriot, The Patriot in leather, and The Ranchman. All three are part of a collaboration with Heat Straps, a company founded by two firefighter brothers. Just like the Hot Shot boot, if you want something tough and capable, get it from the people who spend their time needing to be capable in tough environments. With a statement like "They may not make them like they used to, but we do," Heat Straps offers the perfect expertise for a made-in-America jacket to compliment the best made-in-America boots.

Dandy Del Mar drops new popular sold out favorite
Relax in style with Dandy Del Mar's popular Cannes Robe
Dandy Del Mar Cannes Robe open

We don't know if it is just because the holiday season just ended or if we are still in the end-of-the-year transition phase where we are trying to figure out if any problem at work is a 2024 problem or a 2025 problem, but all we can think about is sitting around and lounging in our houses, watching movies or reading. Luckily for us, there are tons of great loungewear options from which to choose. Dandy Del Mar has reinvented the concept of loungewear for us. Their resort-style and 70s retro vibe have been on our mind all year long, and when we went for some new lounge gear, we were disheartened to find that their popular Cannes Robes were all sold out. But as if they read our minds, the brand dropped another. The Dandy Del Mar Cannes Robe is back with a new color and an even more perfect lounge feel.
New color for the drop

What makes the Cannes Robe so popular is the waffle knit texture. It gives it depth and style that you don't often find in a robe. Sure, you can go with the plush terrycloth robe options if you want to wear something bulky and oppressively hot. Or you can go with the luxurious silk robe if you want to feel light and movable. But why do either of those when you can get the best of both worlds? The browns are perfect for the DDM style and if you really want some resort classiness, pair it with a Cannes shorts and polo set for around the house this winter.
