The sneaker-loafer is fashion’s most divisive shoe — and it’s not going anywhere

The story of the sneaker-loafer trend

First thought to be an obscure trend of 2024, the sneaker-loafer hybrid trend is rounding out to be one of the most divisive footwear trends of 2025. Like many of the newer designs, this hybrid trend boasts the ability to look sophisticated while offering all of the comfort features of a typical sneaker. Designed to be a practical dressy everyday shoe, the sneaker-loafer trend sounded like the ideal balance.

However, much of the controversy comes from the shoe’s unique look, which often utilizes the top of a loafer with the outsole of a sneaker. As part of fashion’s growing “ugly shoe” trend, which also brought us the “dad shoe,” this design is crafted to stand out from the others on the shelves. A bulkier version of a dressy loafer, this silhouette has captured eyes for its one-of-a-kind look. And while many are still debating whether the trend deserves longevity, brands are already planning how to take this trend on with their stylish touch.

Where did the trend start?

While many brands, like Cole Haan, have had some iteration on the style, there’s no doubt that the biggest star of the trend has been the New Balance 1906L. The loafer first teased during the Junya Watanabe runway has become one of the primary stars of the trend, pushing it to a brand new audience. Shortly after, brands like Converse and Hoka joined the trend with their own iteration of the style. Some have opted for a more sneaker-focused style, while others have chosen a more sophisticated touch for their hybrid look.

While the trend has only been short-lived, it’s already become home to microtrends. Brands have utilized this rising hybrid trend to combine other styles, such as sneakers and mules, mules and loafers, and more.

The appeal of the hybrid shoe

Besides being a statement shoe, the sneaker-loafer trend is designed to be the multifunctional shoe of the future. Mixing the footwear technology of a sneaker, the hybrid shoe can double as a practical dress shoe that won’t tire you out.

“Today’s consumer is looking for versatility without compromising style – and that’s exactly where hybrid footwear shines,” said a Reebok Brand Rep. “With Reebok’s latest collaboration with Engineered Garments, we wanted to blur the lines between sport and sophistication, creating something that feels just as at home on city streets as it does in a creative workspace. That’s where the Brogue-loafer-inspired details came in, to provide more artisan style. This shift is driving us to rethink materials, silhouettes, and function – delivering shoes that adapt to modern life,” they concluded.

As the hybrid shoe continues to evolve, so will the styles and iterations that will be released. Reebok and Engineered Garments’ collaboration showcased how even the sneaker-loafer trend is evolving to include more sophisticated details that turn this trend into the newest must-have for officewear, formal events, and everyday errands.

How do you style the snoafer?

Styling the snoafer (as it is colloquially called) can seem like a bigger challenge than it is. Because of the chunky outsole design, pairing it with your formal wear may seem impractical. However, if you’re looking to hop on the trend, the easiest way to blend this into your wardrobe is by opting for a tamer look comprised of a monochromatic shoe with the same tone as your suit. This sleek and easy-to-achieve styling will help your sneaker-loafer shoe blend seamlessly and appear more versatile. Like any good sneaker, the hybrid shoe can also be part of your casual attire by matching with almost anything in your wardrobe.

Since this trend has become a cult favorite, there are plenty of options when it comes to materials and colors. For those looking for a more statement look, brands like New Balance and Hoka have bolder colorways and fun materials that’ll make them stand out. On the other hand, options made of suede and patent leather take on a more subtle and traditional look.

Still not convinced? It might be too late

Although it seems as if the hybrid shoe trend is a passing fad, the truth is that the trend is here to stay. As the trend has become more viral and mainstream, the releases have become more frequent and bigger successes. Styles like the New Balance 1906L and Reebok x Engineered Garments Instapump Fury 94 have become so popular that each drop instantly sells out.

As more brands like Nike have already announced their versions to be released soon, this style is likely to grow in popularity. With more consumers looking for a blend of style and comfort, the sneaker-loafer trend has entered the market at an ideal time. A product of brands’ constant innovation on existing styles, the sneaker-loafer trend might just be one of the most exciting releases of recent seasons. Unfortunately for those looking for this trend to disappear soon, it seems it’s only getting started.

Saucony Ride 18 summer

Summer running can bring joy and pain. Joy in the form of sunrise (or sunset) miles, sharing a run with friends, or appreciating nature. Pain arises when the temps creep past 90 degrees, and a leisurely pace feels like a sprint through the desert.

Saucony released the Ride 18 Summer to accommodate those highs and lows, with materials and style that match the season. I tested the shoe during a heat wave in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, and it surprised me in some ways, and left me wanting in others. Here’s my take.
