Headed to Smoky Mountains soon? Watch out for these road closures

It’s no surprise that autumn is one of the most popular times to visit the Great Smoky Mountains. However, visitors looking to experience the fall foliage this year should be aware of several temporary road closures and maintenance projects announced by the National Park Service (NPS). From September 23 to 27, these projects could affect your travel plans.

From September 23 through September 26, park maintenance crews will implement temporary single-lane closures along the north and southbound Spur between Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. The closures will be in effect from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Crews will be conducting several maintenance activities, including mowing, cleaning ditches, removing fallen trees and branches, picking up litter, and repairing guardrails — all in preparation for the prettiest time of year.

The single-lane closures may cause delays for travelers, so visitors are advised to plan extra time for their journeys. Drivers are urged to reduce their speeds, drive with caution, and remain vigilant for workers and equipment on the road.

In addition to the single-lane closures on the Spur, River Road will be completely closed for two nights (from the evening of September 25 through the morning of September 26, and again from the evening of September 26 through the morning of September 27) to accommodate the ongoing work. The road will be closed from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., and will include the boundary in Gatlinburg to the intersection of Newfound Gap Road and US Highway 441. These nighttime closures are part of the Great American Outdoors Act-funded project, which focuses on rehabilitating the first two miles of Newfound Gap Road near Gatlinburg.

For most national parks, June is the busiest season of the year. School's out, vacation's in full swing, and families have been planning for months for a little adventure. Yosemite is one of these crown jewels, with its waterfalls full of snowmelt and the weather finally perfect enough for hiking. However, with the timed entry reservations so difficult to snag, you might be better off finding another national park for your summer adventures. Here's my list of the top national parks to visit in June.
North Cascades National Park

Known as the "American Alps," North Cascades National Park holds a similar candle to the Austrian Alps. With its rugged and remote glaciers, jagged peaks, and jaw-dropping waterfalls, you'll see some amazing sights. In June, the melted snow reveals famous trails like the Cascade Pass, with wildflowers growing this way and that. Personally, I can't tear my eyes away from the deep turquoise lakes.

For most of the world, Turkmenistan remains a mystery. Landlocked in Central Asia, it’s the second largest country in the region, yet it’s one of the least-known nations globally. Part of the reason for its obscurity? Turkmenistan has long maintained some of the strictest visa policies in the world. Independent travelers could only access the country on a transit visa, typically valid for just 3 to 7 days, or by joining a guided tour that required pre-arranged, government-approved invitations.

But that may soon change. According to The Independent, Turkmenistan has passed a new law that simplifies the visa process. Under the new system, travelers will only need to fill out an online form, eliminating the need for a formal invitation. Although President Serdar Berdymukhamedov will have the final say on the specifics (including the types of electronic visas and their validity) the new process promises to make visiting Turkmenistan far easier for travelers.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park just announced a series of road maintenance projects to take place throughout the month of May. These initiatives will particularly affect the road along the Spur, which is the roadway that connects Gatlinburg to Pigeon Forge. In order to ensure as little disruption as possible for visitors to the park, the National Park Service are implementing a series of temporary single-lane closures.

This maintenance is routine, and will include activities like mowing, ditch cleaning, fallen tree and branch removal, and litter pickup. This way, the Sur will remain safe and scenic for the 2025 season. Here are the dates:
