Cover More Ground: Salewa

If you’re serious about backpacking, climbing, or bagging a few summits this summer, you’re going to have to graduate to top-shelf gear. We’re not talking about taking a short hike in your running shoes. No, if you’re going to be putting on double digit miles in a day – or even ambitious enough to tackle a week of backpacking – your boots are the first thing you should start upgrading. The boot gurus at Salewa were kind enough to help us select a few pairs for any mountain adventure this year, and we’ve been logging some trail miles in anticipation of some big spring treks.

Alp Flow GTX
The Alp Flow is Salewa’s crown jewel hiking boot. It features GORE-TEX Surround technology, which means short of jumping in a lake you’ll enjoy dry feet for every mile. A burly Vibram sole stands up to extreme punishment – ours have nearly a hundred miles on them and still look brand new. Finally, the 3F fit system ensures a blister free ride no matter how far the trail takes you. Look for them to hit retailers later this summer.

MTN Trainer
For technical terrain, a boot or shoe designed with climbing in mind is your ticket to the top. The Mountain Trainer series comes in both low and mid-top heights. Its toe is stiff enough to provide some edge grip should you need to scramble up steep rock. The lace system goes all the way to your toes, enabling you to dial the fit perfectly.

Ramble GTX
The Ramble is much more of a mellow, lifestyle shoe than Salewa has previously offered. However, don’t let that fool you. This year it is getting updated with GORE-TEX Surround, and has the same 3F fit heritage that all Salewa boots do. We love this shoe for logging days at the office and thousand-mile commutes by airplane, but it has performed well on a couple of spontaneous evening treks to catch a sunset from the trail.

Grounded’s G2 EV RV offers all the comforts of home, remote-controlled everything, and a 250-mile range
Explore the country with this customizable, high-tech electric camper van
Blurred view of the Grounded RVs G2 electric RV camper van driving down a country road.

We're still in the early stages of the EV revolution, but there's no denying that the future of cars — all vehicles, really — is electric. But the EV revolution for RVs has barely just begun. Thankfully, a number of companies are leading the charge (pun intended) to develop new and innovative technologies to take recreational vehicles to the next level. Case in point: Grounded's G2 Campervan. It's an all-new, all-electric RV with all the comforts of home, a boatload of remote-controlled tech features, and a solid 250-mile range.

From the outside, the G2 camper van might look like a repurposed Amazon delivery truck. The design is low-key, bordering on bland. But that streamlined, no-nonsense profile helps keep this EV aerodynamic — an important element in achieving its 250-mile range. While that figure hardly competes with even the thirstiest, gas-powered vans capable of hundreds of miles on a single tank, it's a respectable starting point.

27North’s F550 Ascender is a luxurious overlander that looks more like a yacht than a pickup truck camper
This extreme overlander has a king bed, walnut cabinets, and a security system

Camper vans and lightweight travel trailers are cool and all, but most are built for comfort, easy towing, and leisurely road trips. They aren’t fit for venturing off pavement. So, when you’re looking to get far, far off the beaten path, you need a rugged rig that’s built to go just about anywhere. You need a rig like 27North’s ridiculously overbuilt F550 Ascender overlander pickup truck camper.

As the name implies, every 27North F550 Ascender starts life as a Ford F550 Crew Cab. Straight off the showroom floor, it’s already a very capable pickup with a 6.7-liter Power Stroke V-8 diesel mated to a 10-speed TorqShift auto transmission. The commercial-grade combination is good for 475 horsepower and a whopping 1,050 ft-lbs of torque — perfect for towing just about anything or ripping stumps out of your backyard on the weekends.
