Remus Bourbon is launching a new whiskey based on a "happy accident"

Remus Bourbon is named for the “King of Bootleggers,” George Remus. The brand is known for its popular, limited-edition whiskeys. Recently, it announced its newest release, the Remus Master Distiller Experimental Series.

Produced by Ross & Squibb Distillery, the Remus Master Distiller Experimental Series only exists because of a “happy accident” when Master Distiller Ian Stirsman was surprised at the quality and complexity of a 2015 experimental barrel.

The first release, Master Distiller Experimental Series No. 1, was matured for nine years in a lightly charred, heavily toasted Seguin Moreau barrel with staves seasoned for two full years. The result is a 107-proof complex, memorable whiskey that (according to the brand) begins with a nose of cedar, port wine, and fig. Sipping it reveals notes of oak, toasted marshmallow, and chocolate. The finish is warming and lingering and ends with a mix of candied pecans, black walnuts, and leather.

“The Experimental Series is our new creative playground, where distilling heritage meets bold innovation,” Stirsman said in a press release.

“Our goal is to make our chapter in the long legacy of Remus Bourbon one that’s worth reading. I look forward to bringing something new to bourbon drinkers year after year.”

Master Distiller Experimental Series No. 1 is available in limited quantities at select liquor retailers in Arizona, California, Connecticut, Kansas, Massachusetts, Maryland, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wisconsin for the suggested retail price of $79.99. The best beers from California you can buy anywhere
California is more than just IPAs
Sierra Nevada

Currently, more than 9,000 breweries of all sizes operate in the US. That’s an awful lot of IPAs, stouts, and lagers to choose from. Some states are more saturated with breweries (per capita) than others. This includes places like Vermont, Colorado, Maine, Oregon, and, of course, California. While I could take a deep dive into all the biggest beer-producing states, today is all about The Golden State.

I have a special affinity for California beer, and it’s because of one style in particular. Sure, you can find a beer style to fit every palate in the state, but in California, the IPA reigns supreme. In fact, if you look at almost any list ranking the best beers in the state, it will be littered with IPA options. While I often imbibe pilsners and other lagers (as well as wheat beers and other lighter beers) in the summer as well as stouts and porters (and other dark beers) in the winter, I always go back to the classic West Coast IPA.
