With all the fitness trends that come and go and the seemingly ever-increasing wave of influencers sharing their fitness journeys on social media, we might think people are becoming more physically active overall. All around me, I’ve seen people becoming more and more interested in improving their fitness and wellness and trying to exercise more and eat healthier.

Recently, researchers investigated the physical activity levels of millions of American adults, with interesting results. Let’s look at the new research.

The study

In the study published in the journal PLOS ONE, researchers assessed the physical activity levels of two million American adults from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System surveys between 2011 and 2019. The researchers noted that physical inactivity is a major public health concern linked to various adverse health outcomes.

The study results

The researchers reported that the physical activity levels of adults in general are declining and fewer people are meeting the recommended activity guidelines of 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity a week. The researchers noted a steady decline, specifically in young adults. Previous research associated increasing age with declines in physical activity, but this study showed many young people are also becoming less and less active over time.

Only around half of the adults in this study reported sufficient moderate-vigorous activity. The other half simply weren’t getting enough. Interestingly, the study aligned with previous research showing that men are more likely to be physically active than women. The researchers noted that it’s helpful to understand how the behavior of the population shifts and how this impacts public health.

Concluding thoughts

This large study shows us that people might be becoming less physically active overall, which isn’t good news for our health as movement is a crucial part of a healthy lifestyle. I think it’s time to do some cardio, lift some weights, or step onto my yoga mat.

In our sugary, modern world, the tempting sweetness, sneaky added sugars, and processed foods are everywhere. For our blood sugar levels, it’s like stepping onto a rollercoaster ride with spikes rising up and swoops coming down. Lowering your overall sugar intake, being mindful of the sugar in your diet (and foods that break down to sugar in your body), and consuming healthier, balanced, nutritious meals throughout the day make a difference to our overall wellness. I like to say that more balanced meals result in more balanced blood sugar.

In general, staying dedicated to your resistance training has been proven to build muscle mass and strength, along with plenty of other benefits. Even training just two or three times a week can make a difference to your muscle power over time. Recently, researchers explored how training your muscles in the more stretched or elongated position, like the deeper part of that squat, impacts muscle growth. Let’s take a look at the research.

How Allbirds active shoes changed my jogging routine
Choosing the right shoes matters more than I thought
Allbirds Tree Gliders

When it comes to sneakers, I've never been brand-loyal. I tend to buy any style of sneakers that I like the aesthetics of, regardless of the brand. That is, until I became a massive fan of Allbirds active shoes. I bought these shoes because I liked the look of them. Little did I know that these shoes would change how I feel about sneaker brand loyalty. Wearing these shoes for the past couple of months has made me realize how far a well-constructed active shoe can take you in achieving fitness goals. Here's what I love about Allbirds active shoes and how they've completely transformed my treadmill jogging routine (and how they could change yours, too)
Durability and construction

I started my jogging routine when I got a home treadmill in January. In the past, I had tried (and failed) many jogging routines due to painful ankles and knees. I had always thought I lacked cardiovascular stamina or physical fitness for jogging. It turns out it wasn't me who had the problem; it was my shoes.
