Soft and cozy flannel shirts may just be having their moment in Fall 2020. Designer Greg Lauren features a ripped-and-repaired, made in Los Angeles model for an eye-popping $1,000. Italian luxury guru Brunello Cucinelli’s weighs in at $825 for a madras lightweight version, while Amiri’s battered $790 interpretation features bleached graffiti accents and a hem that looks as though somebody’s pit bull terrier got a hold of it. Luckily for the rest of us, there are plenty of options that let us look smart while indulging in the fabric’s pajama-like comfort; all without breaking the bank. From technical fabrics to Western styling to shirts-on-a-budget, Fall’s flannels offer something for everyone.

Eton Contemporary Fit Check

Eton Contemporary Fit Check

Eton is well-known for its colorful dress shirts and amazing fit. This minimal check offers the ease of a classic flannel, but still works for even the most corporate dress code. The cutaway collar gives it a nearly formal quality, and looks great with a sleek black satin tie. We like it worn under a knit blazer with dark denim for an updated look that means business.

Paige Everett Plaid

Paige brings a bit of retro novelty to this Southwest-inspired pattern. The rich, rusty palette is reminiscent of desert landscapes, with the vibe of a thrift-store treasure. It’s a perfect shirt to wear with this fall’s rich corduroys, and will look great under a tweed sportcoat or a short jacket.

Alex Mill Standard

As the days get shorter, a pop of color might be just the thing to lift your spirits. This flannel shirt paints pure, clear hues of red, yellow, blue, and black on an ecru ground. Wear it happy with washed-out denim or a pair of colorful chinos.

Jcrt Modern Nature Camo

The designers’ inspiration for this shirt’s pattern comes from British director and artist Derek Jarman; specifically his book Modern Nature, a diary based on his garden. The design turns camouflage on its head, washing the traditional olive drab colors with unmissable bright shades of red. Keep the rest of your outfit simple, and don’t even try to blend in.

Mack Weldon Warmknit

Mack Weldon applies modern textile technology to bring you the warmest, softest flannel shirt yet. The poly/wool blend features moisture wicking and heat trapping all in a nice light weight. We appreciate the uncluttered “graph paper”pattern, too.

Huf Heights Long Sleeve Flannel

Huf Heights Long Sleeve Flannel

Huf’s take on the traditional Buffalo plaid blends outdoor heritage with a bit of skate park attitude. It’s a great overshirt, worn with your favorite graphic T-shirt and baggie jeans; whether you’re doing acid drops in a city park or day-hiking through a national one.

L.L. Bean Chamois

It’d probably be sacrilege to talk about flannel shirts and not bring up L.L. Bean. The company offers so many classic plaid patterns and solids, all in beefy cotton flannel, that you’d be tempted to start a collection. Start yours with this unexpected horizontal stripe for an updated take on the traditional.

Wrangler Retro Western Snap

Wrangler Retro Western Snap

This clean, dark plaid flannel takes on a Country-Western accent with the addition of a cowboy style yoke and snap closures, yet still maintains a sense of formality. It’ll work for the roadhouse — with the clean, rounded hem worn untucked over your favorite jeans, or tucked into slim-fit gray flannel trousers.

Uniqlo Flannel Long Sleeve

Sometimes the KISS principle (Keep It Simple, Stupid) is just as well applied to our wardrobes as it is to corporate strategy. This value-priced solid flannel shirt will get you through many a video conference with ease, looks neat and trim in a chilly office, and celebrates minimalist style at the socially distant apple picking.
