On Tuesday, September 23, the new Terminal 1 at San Diego International Airport (SAN) debuts, bringing modern design, built-in sustainability, and enhanced access. The long-awaited terminal began construction in 2021 and will provide significant improvements, considering that the old Terminal 1 was built in 1967. Not only will travelers enjoy a more seamless experience, but be surrounded by soothing natural light and local artwork.
The New Terminal 1 has a community-driven design

SAN conducted over 100 community meetings and listened to what people wanted in a new Terminal 1. That resulted in a human-centered design that evoked the places and people of San Diego, with modern technology and architecture. From easier access to artist-designed plazas, travelers can enjoy a trip to the airport instead of enduring it.
Stats of the new Terminal 1 at SAN:
- Over 5,200 parking spaces
- 185 EV charging stations
- 30 gates
- 30 restaurants and retail stores
- 13 lane security checkpoint
The new Terminal 1 features a sustainability-driven design, reflecting the airport’s commitment to the environment. That includes clean air and zero-waste initiatives, and energy and water conservation.
Travelers can also enjoy themselves among five artist-designed spaces, located in the ticketing lobby, a family play area, and outdoor plazas. There are also art installations, like A Day in the Sun by Amy Ellingson, which is an ode to the city’s ocean environment.
Passengers can also enjoy easier access, with an on-airport entrance road that bypasses local traffic. There will also be a pedestrian path and bicycle lanes that connect the airport to the city’s communities. Plans also include space for public transportation.
Two lounges are also set to open — an Escape Lounge and a Delta SkyClub — along with abundant options for shopping and dining. The Escape Lounge will open in 2027, and the SkyClub will launch once Delta moves to the new terminal.
When the new Terminal 1 opens, Southwest Airlines, Sun Country Airlines, Spirit Airlines, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue, and Breeze Airways will move in. WestJet and Air Canada join them in spring 2026, with Delta following at the beginning of 2028.
