The old man test is taking over TikTok. Is your balance up for the challenge?

Balance and flexibility are increasingly important throughout the years, especially to lower your risk of falls and injuries. TikTokers are doing the ‘old man test’ everywhere, and it might seem silly, but it could reveal a lot about your balance and your general health and fitness. Something as simple as putting on your socks and shoes could let you know if your balance is pretty good or if it could use some work. The old man test is a quick and worthwhile challenge.

What is the ‘old man test’

Fitness trainer Chris Hinshaw originally developed the ‘old man test’ in 2021 to help people check their balance, coordination, and biological age and pay attention to their current fitness level. Now, the old man test is still picking up steam. It involves standing on one foot and putting on your socks and shoes rather than sitting down, which is an easier go-to for many of us. It’s a simple concept, but it’s more difficult than it looks. You can’t lean on anything, and you have to shift all of your weight onto one leg, maintain your balance, and lift your other leg to put your sock and shoe on that foot. Next, you shift your weight to the other leg.

Similar challenges like the sit-stand or sit-rise test have also gone viral and made you stop and think about your balance and flexibility. With the sit-stand test, you have to sit on the ground and stand back up again without using your arms and hands. With the bar-hang test, you have to do a dead hang on a pull-up bar for about 30-60 seconds to see if you’re in good shape and predict how you might age.

Studies show that good balance is associated with a longer life. Improving your balance makes you less likely to fall and get injured and helps you maintain good posture. If you’re a little shaky trying to do the old man test right now, it’s something that can be worked on and improved over time. You can also try balance exercises like Pilates, yoga, tai chi, stability ball exercises, and climbing stairs. Other types of exercise are also beneficial for well-rounded fitness.

What is a drop set? Break through fitness plateaus and level up your strength
Can you build muscle in less time with drop sets? What are the potential drawbacks?
Man laying on workout bench doing chest presses with dumbbells

There’s a good reason why powerlifters and bodybuilders use drop sets to elevate their strength training to the next level. You can test your limits, enhance endurance, and amplify muscle gain. This resistance training technique is worth considering when you want to kick things up a notch and challenge yourself to maximize your potential.

I find drop sets especially challenging but also one of the most rewarding of all resistance training techniques when I want to overcome a plateau. Plus, you get that sense of accomplishment when you're done lifting those heavy weights. You could start by trying it once a week for at least a few weeks to test your limits and reach a whole new level of strength.

Top tips for plogging: Clean up your community while getting fit
Improve your fitness and your local community at the same time by going plogging

On our city streets, research shows that cigarettes, bottle caps, and paper receipts are some of the most common littered items. Nearly 50 billion pieces of litter were reported along U.S. roadways and waterways, according to the Keep America Beautiful 2020 National Litter Study. The good news is that we are making progress, and the study also reported that litter on America’s roads was down 54% since 2009. Keeping our streets, neighborhoods, beaches, and oceans cleaner and reducing pollution and litter is important to me. I was pretty happy to hear about plogging — one of the latest fitness trends that benefits your health and the environment.

Plogging is the simple act of jogging and picking up trash in your surroundings. It made me stop and think, "When was the last time I picked up trash outside?" Well, it was last week when I was walking my dogs around my neighborhood by the public lake dock. I picked up some receipts and a discarded fishing line that could have been harmful to animals, including my beloved pups.
