A Taste of the Season: Abraham Bowman Gingerbread Beer Finished Bourbon

About a year ago, whiskey maker A. Smith Bowman sent four barrels that contained bourbon that had been aging down to Hardywood Brewery, makers of a delicious gingerbread stout that they filled up the barrels with for 12 weeks and sent back to A. Smith Bowman. Finally, A. Smith Bowman refilled the barrels with six year bourbon and the result was the wonderful Gingerbread Beer Finished Bourbon.

Perfect for fall, this bourbon adds a hint of gingerbread, cinnamon and spice — just a light touch of sweetness. Brian Prewitt, A. Smith Bowman’s master distiller, summed up the concoction just perfectly. “The Gingerbread Beer Finished Bourbon has a great nose and taste starting with its spicy entry and rounding out with a pleasant finish,” he said.

We love whiskey, gingerbread and beer, so we couldn’t wait to get our hands on a bottle of the Abraham Bowman Gingerbread Beer Finished Bourbon. When we finally got it, we instantly opened the bottle, pulled out our special whiskey glasses, and poured some in. The nose was sweet treat — an aroma of spiciness and sweetness. We swirled the liquid in our mouth and sipped it down.

We can picture having this after Thanksgiving dinner with a slice of pumpkin pie. Delicious!

Taste the flavors of the season with these apple and cinnamon cocktails

California Cornucopia by Gray Whale Gin

As far as I'm concerned, it's never a bad time to enjoy a crispy apple pastry covered in baked brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and all the other bakery spices that go so well together. But it is undeniably a flavor combination that's particularly well suited to the colder months, as it invokes warm and comforting feelings when the days are dark and the weather is bleak.

So for cocktails at this time of year, you can look to the trending ingredients of apple and cinnamon for inspiration when crafting your creations. While gin might not be the first ingredient you think of with these flavors, you can add a hint of spice in your garnishes, like this recipe using Gray Whale Gin which features a cinnamon powder and star anise garnish atop a fluffy egg white foam. Or make use of bitters, like the Baked Apple Bitters found in this recipe for a Bourbon Apple delight.
