Don’t have the funds to go on a splashy vacation this summer? No problem! Plan a staycation instead. This low-budget option may seem like a cop out, but when done right, can actually be just as restorative and fun as your run-of-the-mill vacation.
To help you get started, we’ve laid out some of our favorite tips and tricks for planning the perfect holiday from the comfort of your own home.
Tips for Planning the Perfect Staycation
Make an Itinerary
A staycation should feel like any other vacation, so it’s important to make an itinerary! The goal is to transform your home town into a place for exploration and fun, so fill up your schedule like you would for any other trip. This way you won’t fall into the trap of just lounging around at home (and may even stumble upon something you never knew your city had to offer!).
Unplug, unplug, unplug. Just because you’re home doesn’t mean you have to stay connected to your phone or email. In fact, it’s crucial that you don’t. No matter the location, a vacation is about you, so take the time to recharge away from the white noise.
Slip into a true holiday vibe by documenting your trip with touristy photos. Sure, it’s a little cheesy, but part of the fun of traveling is snapping pics and sharing them with loved ones. Bonus points if you come up with a playful hashtag (#holistay, anyone?) and invite your Instagram followers to tag along for the stay-at-home journey.
The day before your staycation, do a deep clean of your house or hire someone to do it for you. Spruce up your space and you’ll feel as though you’ve landed in a posh boutique hotel, which will up the fantasy by at least 125%. And don’t be shy about leaving yourself a discreet chocolate mint on your freshly laundered pillowcase.
Use a Pseudonym
One of the best things about traveling is that you can be whoever you wanna be, so why not thrown on an alias or two? Go to a bar or café you’ve never been to before and try out a new persona — we’re talking fake name, job, heck, even an accent. Truly, no better way to be a tourist than to, you know, actually be one, so have fun with a little make believe.
Class it Up
Just because you’re not staying at a hotel doesn’t mean you can’t take advantage of the amenities. Put some of the money you’d normally use on lodging toward a night of bougie cocktails at the fanciest hotel in your area. Make sure to wear your snazziest duds and chat up the other travelers about their adventures.
If you really want to amp up the luxury vacation feel, get thee to a day spa! You saved on baggage fees, expensive dinners, and hotel expenditures, so might as well use some of that money to treat yourself to a round of massages, facials, and steams. A staycation can be a great time to pamper yourself like you wouldn’t normally be able to on a “regular” vacation, so take advantage of the opportunity.
Walk it Out
See home with fresh eyes by taking a walking tour of your city. Nowadays, there are a bevy of different guided tours available, many of which center on titillating themes like the homes of long-dead poets, street food hot spots, or even the oldest trees in the area. If you live in a major city, chances are you can book one of these tours online or even download an app to guide yourself. If you live in a smaller community, check in with the local historical society to see if they could offer tour suggestions.
