What drinks to make with pandan liqueur

How to use this liqueur featuring the Southeast Asian plant pandan

The essential spirits used in most cocktails might be a limited group, but where you can really explore many different flavors in your home bar is in the world of liqueurs. You’ll find small regional brands producing liqueurs featuring everything from sour cherry to bison grass and these are a great way to experiment with flavors that are difficult to get in a fresh form where you are.

That’s the case with ingredients like pandan, a tropical plant frequently used in Southeast Asian cuisine. While you do occasionally find it used in cocktails in the west, it’s a rarity. But a new brand of pandan liqueur, KOTA, aims to change that with its launch this month.

“I fell in love with pandan more than 15 years ago and have incorporated the essence of this Southeast Asian leaf into my cocktails since then, with my own handmade syrups,” says KOTA creator Nico de Soto. “If you walked into any one of my bars, you’d always find a pandan cocktail on the menu. It’s been my dream to create a bottled pandan liqueur that I could share with my fellow bartender pandan fans, as well as for the home bartender looking for something exceptionally flavorful. KOTA Pandan Liqueur is the answer to this dream, and I am so proud to see it on bars throughout Europe and looking forward to the same in the US. I am happy to bring pandan to the people!”

Celebrate the Campari Spritz at this NYC event
Campari Spritz

New York is getting a spritz-themed takeover, as aperitivo brand Campari is setting up a Campari Spritz Square in downtown NYC. The weekend of June 14 and 15, the 171 E. Broadway hub within Chinatown and the Lower East Side will host a weekend dedicated to all things Campari Spritz, including art and jewelry displays, a live DJ, and of course food and music.

The idea of the event is not just to highlight the drink -- which is a bitter, more bracing alternative to the ever-popular Aperol Spritz, that you'll see enjoyed all over Italy -- but also to promote the Italian aperitivo culture which involves small snacks and light cocktails for the early evenings before a meal.

I’m going to be drinking this refreshing spritz all summer long
Lillet

The spritz is an iconic summer drink, but my very favorite type of spritz isn't made with Aperol -- instead, it uses Lillet. If you haven't tried Lillet before, it's a little like vermouth, but with a hefty bitter edge from quinine that I love. If you enjoy the bitter and refreshing edge of tonic water, then I reckon you'd love Lillet Blanc too.

My usual go-to Lillet spritz recipe is equal parts of Lillet and sparkling water, plus an absolute ton of cucumber slices, all served in a big copa glass over a large ice cube. I find that the cucumber gives a crisp, juicy addition to the drink and makes for a lovely low-ABV sipper.
