Shockoe Denim is Serious About Jean Perfection

Shockoe Denim“I think there’s a lot of romance in working with your hands,” Anthony Lupesco, Shockoe Denim founder and designer, said.  “I don’t think there’s anyway to avoid imbuing the craftsman’s personality. We see that as being the artful piece of making a pair of clothes, the person is touching it.” We here at The Manual truly appreciate a brand that values quality craftsmanship above all else. So when we came across Shockoe Denim at Capsule Show in NYC this summer, we knew we wanted to know more about the company’s history and process. Located in Richmond, VA, they take their name from their neighborhood, Shockoe Bottom, which is heart of the city’s art and design renaissance.

So what makes Shockoe Denim stand out from the hundreds of other brands out there? When making jeans, they believe it’s easy to achieve 90 percent. But the last 10 percent can only be obtained through time, sweat and dedication, and they are fanatical about getting to that full 100. Shockoe’s handmade denim has more volume than the average jean because they don’t go through folders during production that can flatten the garment and stress the seams. They finish their inseams with high-density serging at five times the normal stitch count so they don’t snag and sprout holes in unsightly places. And their waistbands are made with two pieces instead of one to stand up against the stress of everyday wear. And if all of Shockoe’s meticulous manufacturing isn’t enough, they offer free repairs for the life of the jean just in case. Shockoe has a fit for everyone from classic straight to slim and tapered for a modern fit.

Kizik releases the hands-free Athens 2 sneaker
Look, Mom! No hands! Slip on the coolest hands-free sneakers
Kizik Athens 2 slip on sneaker

One of the most challenging things about living in a tiny shoebox apartment is the fact that I don't have a good space for a bench to put on my shoes — not unless I want a trip hazard or bruised toes. As someone who has lived in an RV on and off for 7 years, I'm not a stranger to small spaces or making things work. That said, I'm always on the lookout for brand-new products that can make the adventuring easier. So when I saw that hands-free footwear company Kizik just released an updated version of their best-selling Athens shoe, I had to take a look and see what was different.

This second version builds on what made the original Athens great, adding significant upgrades to the Athens 2 based on customer feedback and innovations. The Athens 2 still has the iconic patented Kizik "cage" technology that made these shoes easy as pie to slip into without needing to sit down, tie the laces, or do that weird chicken dance that we've all done trying to get the heel of the shoe on our feet.
