Citizen has launched two new references in its 30th Anniversary collection, directly challenging Grand Seiko’s iconic Snowflake with washi paper dials featuring precious metal leaf decoration at roughly half the price.
The AQ4100-22A employs platinum leaf flakes applied through the traditional Sunago-maki technique, where fine platinum powder is hand-sprinkled onto Tosa washi paper like snow. Citizen describes this as capturing “the magical moment when dawn gently breaks in mid-winter and the rising sun gradually illuminates the freshly fallen snow covering the landscape.”
Unlike Grand Seiko’s “silver planting process” used on the Snowflake dial, Citizen’s approach creates more delicate surface texturing through traditional Japanese decorative techniques. The white dial’s crinkled brilliance aims to evoke freshly fallen snow with greater intensity than the Hotaka Mountains inspiration of its Grand Seiko rival.
The companion AQ4103-16W features black washi paper with gold leaf creating kasure brushstroke effects and brown gradients reminiscent of autumn mountain peaks at dawn. This represents the first appearance of Citizen’s new Duratect Amber Yellow coating, creating the case’s golden hue.
Both 38mm cases use Citizen’s Super Titanium construction with specialized Duratect coatings: Platinum for the white dial model and Amber Yellow for the gold variant. These treatments provide scratch resistance while achieving precious metal aesthetics. Dark grey and brown genuine crocodile leather straps with titanium folding clasps complete the presentation.
The caliber A060 solar-quartz movement delivers accuracy of ±5 seconds per year, significantly surpassing Grand Seiko’s Spring Drive technology. Combined with the smaller 38mm case size versus the Snowflake’s 41mm diameter, these specifications target collectors seeking superior precision in more compact proportions.
Each reference includes Citizen’s signature eagle emblem at 6 o’clock, dauphine hands, beveled applied indices, and framed date window. The $3,200 platinum model and $3,300 gold variant launch October 2025, limited to 400 pieces each.
This positioning directly challenges Grand Seiko’s pricing while offering technical advantages through quartz precision and titanium construction.
Available October 2025 through Citizen authorized dealers.
