Celebrate World Whiskey Day and Mourn the End of Mad Men

Whiskey is an incredible beverage. It can have notes of citrus, hints of dried fruit, it can be smoky, it can be spicy — it can be anything you want it to be. Given the spirit’s undeniable glory, it should come as no surprise that World Whiskey Day is a thing, and that thing just happens to be this Saturday.

And since whiskey makes an appearance in virtually every episode of AMC’s hit show Mad Men, it makes perfect sense that World Whiskey Day would share a weekend with the show’s final episode (Sunday, 10PM ET on AMC).

Many of us at The Manual are enamored with Mad Men. The style, the drinks, the smart dialogue, and high-minded themes have fascinated us for seven seasons. We’re sad to see it go, but we’re excited for what will surely be an excellent finale.

Will Don leave the pressures of the East behind him for good? Will he salvage some kind of redemption from his years of boozing and womanizing? Well, whatever happens, you’ll probably want a glass of whiskey in your hand as you watch it unfold.

Another thing about whiskey is it’s the perfect drink for both mourning and celebrating. The folks at Jack Daniels, the legendary American whiskey distillers, have created four beer and whiskey cocktails to help us mourn the end of Mad Men and celebrate the beginning of summer.

Mix-a-long: Make a cocktail with The Manual and Wolves Whiskey

Maybe you caught our previous coverage of Wolves Whiskey here on The Manual. We've had the chance before to sit down with Eduardo Gonzalez, the Operations Manager of Wolves Whiskey, and learn a little more about the brand and its unique distilling process. We couldn't get enough, so we brought him back for more. Only, this time, we're doing things a little differently. Instead of sharing a traditional interview, both Gonzalez and resident conversationalist Dan Gaul have teamed up to make and enjoy some delicious cocktails.

In true "let's go" fashion, Gonzalez starts by sharing one of the best moments from that interview. "One of my favorite parts of the conversation is what we like to drink. Being in the spirits industry, your favorite cocktail, you kind of go through phases. But the longest-running phase for me has always been the Boulevardier," he says.

As Labor Day weekend marks the end of summer and the beginning of fall, now is the time to get out your darker spirits. Many people like to enjoy lighter drinks in the summertime, with plenty of spritzes and bubbly concoctions. And for winter, you'll want something hearty and warming. But coming into this transition period, it's a good excuse to get a bit experimental with your cocktails.

Why not keep the last of the summer vibes with a spritz, but embrace the incoming fall by making it a bourbon spritz rather than an Aperol one? And now is a great time to get out your whiskeys and to try out drinks like a cherry sour or a bourbon Gold Rush.
