Billy Reid and Blackberry Farm Go on the Road to Shindig

It’s nearly that time of year when fashion designer Billy Reid holds his annual Shindig, a festival that brings the worlds of fashion, music, art and food together in The Shoals, Alabama.

What exactly is Shindig? According to a rep, “Billy Reid has strong relationships with some of the biggest bands and chefs in the world. Whether it’s partnering with artists like Mumford & Sons, Alabama Shakes, My Morning Jacket or Jack White and his label, Third Man Records; hosting dinners and fundraisers with James Beard Award-winning chefs and feeding the company’s ongoing partnership with the Southern Foodways Alliance; or collaborating with the highly supportive Council of Fashion Designers of America, Billy Reid is at the forefront of all that informs our current culture. Shindig combines all of these interests, producing an event with a greater cultural bandwidth than that of other similar festivals currently operating.”

To anticipate the festival, Reid is presenting the Road to Shindig, a number of events at various Billy Reid locations. Blackberry Farm, an intimate, luxury hotel located in Tennessee, partnered up with Billy Reid stores across the country for its new Classic Saison craft beer, which is a Belgian-style farmhouse ale. Take a whiff of the aroma, which is dominated by fragrant, citrus-like fruit esters with an earthy and floral hop aroma, thanks to the use of Noble-type hops during the brewing process. It has a deep-gold hue and a voluminous head. It’s perfect for a warm day. Bill Reid stores will host a number of events, culminating in a Billy Reid X Blackberry Farms dinner at Shindig. The next event takes place August 6 at Billy Reid Atlanta.

We can’t wait to try this beer during the Road to Shindig.

Steven Kurutz and American Giant endeavor to create a flannel 100% American made
Follow American Giant to bring flannel back to the USA
man in flannel holding a book

What makes the flannel shirt something that stays with us here in America? Is it the quintessential garment of the American worker? Does it make us feel as though we are driving horses across the plains in the old American West? How about working the day away, clearing logs from the Pacific Northwest to supply the entire country with the lumber needed to build houses, decks, and shop fronts? Or maybe we don't have to reach back as far to imagine the flannel renaissance of the 1990s bringing us the nostalgia of our childhood imitating Kurt Cobain on stage. Either way, the flannel is a staple of Americana, and American fashion brand American Giant has spent years attempting to bring that garment back home.

What started out as an article in the New York Times blossomed into a half-decade journey for author Steven Kurutz to chronicle AG's desire to bring flannel-making back to the shores of the United States and to save factory jobs in his new book, American Flannel. As a native of a small town in Pennsylvania, Kurutz has watched his town wither away as factory jobs were shipped overseas. For him, the book was more than a story of American determination; it was a personal connection to a quest to save his own hometown and others like it.
