The end of the year is quickly approaching. You’re putting together your reading list for your intellectual resolutions. You are putting together your new exercise equipment for your physical resolutions. You’re setting your sleep schedule so you can start the year off with a healthy routine. And planning your vacations so you can see more of the world with an adventurous spirit. You’re also likely RSVPing to the New Year’s Eve party of your choice, and sartorial legend Todd Snyder wants to help you look and feel your best as you ring in the new year. But that isn’t all, the Todd Snyder Winter Style Guide is set up to help you do more than party away the final ticks of the clock in 2024, it is meant to help you look great the rest of the winter as well.

An upside to the season is the party that you are about to attend. Whether you can wear a great sweater with a unique pattern or a velvet dinner jacket to elevate you and everyone in the party, the style guide has that set up and ready for you in the Mouline Collared Sweater or the Space Dyed Sweater and the Italian Double-Breasted Shawl Tuxedo Jacket. One downside of the season is that you may have to brave the cold or shovel the walkway and driveway. Snyder’s style guide has you covered there with a handful of sherpa garments guaranteed to keep you warm and functional while stylish if you just have to run some errands.

Style hacks: Your suit should come with two pairs of pants
Remedy one of the biggest struggles with suits with this one hack
Man in Men's Wearhouse Blue Suit

When I first started selling suits, it was mostly to men who were leaving the military and starting as aides to politicians, or men working as doctors, lawyers, or accountants. Then, of course, you had the lucrative wedding business. But one thing was common among every man I sold suits to: They were hardworking and spent their days getting things done.

Now, while this sounds honorable and a fantastic way for a man to live life, working hard and providing for his family, there are some setbacks or some side effects to this lifestyle. One of them is the impact it has on your best suits. Suit pants for men are typically lighter, with an elevated fabric that doesn't always stand up to the more rigorous work of the hardest-working men. Therefore, there's a hack that you should start implementing in your suit shopping every chance you get. Every suit you own should come with a second pair of pants. It will save you years of heartache.

Head of Brand for Tie Bar teaches us how to dress for the Kentucky Derby
TieBar x Laura Ashley two men in stables

The first weekend in May annually hosts what many call "The most exciting two minutes in sports." Other than watching Greg Maddux run out a very rare triple hit by a pitcher back in the '90s, I have never heard anything in sports carry that same label. Ever since the grandson of the Clark half of the Lewis and Clark expedition traveled to Europe and gained a love for the sport of horseracing, the Kentucky Derby has captured the hearts and minds of race fans everywhere.

But, you know I don't write about horse racing. I write about men's style. This brings us to the best part of the day at Churchill Downs: Kentucky Derby outfits. My favorite part of the event is seeing how creative men can get with their looks. The bright colors, the hats, the ties, the fabrics. Maybe it is me being a menswear nerd, or perhaps it is just as sartorially interesting as the Oscars. Either way, I wanted to get some help on how to dress for race day, so I reached out to Michelle Kohanzo, Head of Brand for Tie Bar, and she gave me some insight on how you can capture all the attention without looking like a try-hard.

What every man should know to ensure he's always the best dressed in the room
Man in burgundy sweater polo

We live in a world governed by rules, guidelines, and structures that we must follow. You follow the law, so you don't go to jail. You follow protocols at work, so you don't get fired. And you do what your significant other wishes, so you don't have to download the dating apps again. Men's fashion is unfortunately the same way. There are things every man should know when they set out to discover their style identity.

When I first got into men's style consulting, selling suits, and helping men discover their best selves through their presentation, I was shocked at how often we had to review these fundamentals to give them a firm grasp of their style before we even started talking about overhauling their closet.
