The Rye-ght Stuff: Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Rye

For the first time in 100 years, the Jack Daniel’s Distillery is unveiling a new grain recipe. Released in February of this year, Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Rye is the third marque in the Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Collection. With only 800 barrels available, though, rye fans will need to act quickly to get their hands on this new spirit.

Made from 70% rye, 18% corn, and 12% malted barley, and weighing in at 94-proof, Single Barrel Rye is the third rye released by Jack Daniels—in 2012 and 2014 they released an ‘Un-aged Rye’ and a ‘Rested Rye’, respectively. As the third offering in the Single Barrel expression, Single Barrel Rye follows in the tracks of Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Select and Barrel Proof.

In crafting Single Barrel Rye, the distillers at Jack Daniel’s wanted something that not only spoke to the rich history of rye in the country, but also their signature take on distilling through their Tennessee whiskey-making process, which features the same cave spring water from the Jack Daniel’s Hollow, proprietary yeast and charcoal-mellowing process that’s been used in the distillery’s 150-year-old Tennessee Whiskey recipe.

“There is a reemerging trend of rye whiskeys and we are excited to be able to give friends of Jack Daniel’s a chance to experience it,” said Jeff Arnett, Jack Daniel’s Master Distiller. “You never want to over-barrel a rye whiskey so it was important for us to stay true to the style with grain forward character rather than barrel character while still allowing our barrels to interplay with the whiskey. I’m confident that everyone will be as impressed as I am with the taste and character of this bold new rye offering.”

Talking about the rye is all well and good, but how it tastes is what really matters. Single Barrel Rye starts off lightly sweet opening up to notes of dried fruit and a little nuttiness. The finish is shorter than previous Single Barrel collection offerings, pushing more of the grain character than that of the barrel.

Jack Daniels Single Barrel Rye is available nationwide and retails for approximately $50.

I tried De’Longhi’s smartest espresso machine yet — and ditched my café
It's way smarter than I expected it to be
Delonghi Rivelia

When I first heard about the launch of De'Longhi's Rivelia espresso maker, I was uncertain what to expect. Coming from De'Longhi, the beloved home appliance brand and industry leader, I knew this espresso would be nothing short of exceptional (turns out I had no idea what I was in for). It's safe to say the expectations were high for De'Longhi's advanced technology. However, I wasn't quite prepared to become obsessed with this first-of-its-kind machine.

De'Longhi's Rivelia truly lives up to the attribute of "smart", exceeding expectations of what a home espresso machine can do. Here's what it's like to use the Rivelia at home, and a look at how its innovative technology adapts to your coffee preferences.

Whip up this delicious punch for easy Derby Day entertaining
Natterjack Irish Whiskey

If you're hosting friends for the Kentucky Derby tomorrow, then odds are you've already got your mint juleps planned out and ready to go. But if you haven't, no problem! We've got a punch recipe which you can quickly whip up before your guests arrive, then easily serve to please a crowd.

Whilst the iconic spirit for the day is bourbon, this recipe takes a different approach, swapping in Irish whiskey instead. If you haven't tried Irish whiskies before, these tend to be lighter and fruitier than their Scotch counterparts, making them ideal subs for bourbon. Throw in some vanilla liqueur with cherry and tangerine juice, plus a spicy and sparkling hit of ginger beer, and you've got a punch that's fit for the occasion -- now all you need to do is find an appropriately fancy outfit to wear.

These HexClad pans are the perfect Mother’s Day gift — here’s why
A gift for the cooking mom
HexClad Pan Set

It's no secret that many home cooks are shifting away from using non-stick pans and swapping for healthier alternatives like HexClad pans. I've been using "better-for-you" pans for several years now (and won't ever go back to my old pans). Though I firmly believe everyone should switch, tossing pans that still function well can be tough for some. Moms can be stubborn, especially those with an "if it's not broken, don't fix it" mindset.

I'll admit, breaking up with non-stick pans is a process. First, it comes with some denial, as those pants have probably served you well for years. Yet, if you're a home cook using your frying pans nearly daily, it's 100% worth the switch. Here's why the Hexclad 6-piece frying pan set is the perfect Mother's Day gift for the cooking mom (and the one who refuses to throw away their old frying pans).
