Celebrate World Whiskey Day and Mourn the End of Mad Men

Whiskey is an incredible beverage. It can have notes of citrus, hints of dried fruit, it can be smoky, it can be spicy — it can be anything you want it to be. Given the spirit’s undeniable glory, it should come as no surprise that World Whiskey Day is a thing, and that thing just happens to be this Saturday.

And since whiskey makes an appearance in virtually every episode of AMC’s hit show Mad Men, it makes perfect sense that World Whiskey Day would share a weekend with the show’s final episode (Sunday, 10PM ET on AMC).

Many of us at The Manual are enamored with Mad Men. The style, the drinks, the smart dialogue, and high-minded themes have fascinated us for seven seasons. We’re sad to see it go, but we’re excited for what will surely be an excellent finale.

Will Don leave the pressures of the East behind him for good? Will he salvage some kind of redemption from his years of boozing and womanizing? Well, whatever happens, you’ll probably want a glass of whiskey in your hand as you watch it unfold.

Another thing about whiskey is it’s the perfect drink for both mourning and celebrating. The folks at Jack Daniels, the legendary American whiskey distillers, have created four beer and whiskey cocktails to help us mourn the end of Mad Men and celebrate the beginning of summer.

Get ready for Labor Day weekend with these crowd-pleasing whiskey cocktails
Three whiskey cocktails, from an alternative spritz to a cherry sour
labor day whiskey cocktails bourbon spritz

As Labor Day weekend marks the end of summer and the beginning of fall, now is the time to get out your darker spirits. Many people like to enjoy lighter drinks in the summertime, with plenty of spritzes and bubbly concoctions. And for winter, you'll want something hearty and warming. But coming into this transition period, it's a good excuse to get a bit experimental with your cocktails.

Why not keep the last of the summer vibes with a spritz, but embrace the incoming fall by making it a bourbon spritz rather than an Aperol one? And now is a great time to get out your whiskeys and to try out drinks like a cherry sour or a bourbon Gold Rush.

It’s International Whiskey Day, and you need to try these whiskeys from around the world
There are many lesser-known international whiskeys worth trying
A trio of whiskeys

While we love whisk(e)y every day (only the US and Ireland use the ‘e’ in whiskey), we truly celebrate it every March 27th. This is because that date is International Whisk(e)y Day. Celebrated since 2008, the holiday was created not only as a way to showcase how much of a global spirit whisk(e)y is but also to support Parkinson’s disease research publicly and to honor the late English beer and spirits writer Michael Jackson (a different Michael Jackson) who suffered from the disease. So, not only can you enjoy some tasty drams, but you’re doing it to highlight a great cause.
Whisk(e)ys of the world

Originally, the holiday was created to pay homage to American, Irish, Scottish, Japanese, and Canadian whisk(e)ys only. But it’s become a day to enjoy the spirit on a world scale. This is because, on top of the usual well-known whiskey-producing countries, there are a handful of lesser-known countries crafting award-winning, nuanced, complex, highly memorable whisk(e)ys that deserve your attention.

St. Patrick's Day is a holiday for imbibers. Whether you gravitate toward spirits or beer, there's a St. Patrick's Day drink or riff for you to enjoy as America pours celebratory dye into its rivers and dons every article of green clothing it has. (There's even Irish wine, if you feel so inclined.)

Here, we're focused on mixed drinks, ones that flex some Irish flair or are at least inspired by the land of rolling green hills and shamrocks -- the kind of drink you can clutch triumphantly in hand as you observe a holiday more than 1,000 years old. We won't quiz you on who St. Patrick was, nor will we check your plate to make sure you're eating traditional Irish bacon and cabbage (though you probably should). We just want to give you another excuse to celebrate.
