How to Use Netflix Party to Watch Movies With Friends Online

With everyone staying indoors, the days of going over to a friend’s house to stream movies or binge-watch your favorite Netflix shows have come to a screeching halt. Luckily, there is a free Google Chrome extension called Netflix Party that may offer a solution.

How to Use Netflix Party

This Chrome extension allows you, your friends, your family, and anyone else with a Netflix account to simultaneously stream movies and shows on your desktop. What’s more, anyone in the group can pause, play, fast forward, and rewind the movie, ensuring everyone stays in sync.

There is also a side chat bar where you and your pals can discuss what’s happening during the movie in real-time. And the final cherry on top? You won’t need to share your popcorn with anyone.

Step 1: Make sure everyone has access to a Netflix account

Netflix Party won’t work if the people you are trying to invite don’t have access to Netflix. If they are lacking an account — and haven’t stolen a login from a family member yet — Netflix is offering a 30-day trial for new subscribers.

Step 2: Download the Google Chrome Extension

Once everyone has logged in on their individual computers, they will need to download the Netflix Party extension to go any further. Heres a quick run-down:

  1. Go to netflixparty.com via your Google Chrome browser.
  2. Click Get Netflix Party for free.
  3. You will then be redirected to the Google Chrome web store to download the extension. Click Add to Chrome.
  4. A pop-up box will appear. Click Add Extension, and you should now see a grey NP icon in your browser toolbar.

Step 3: Start the party

Now that you, and hopefully your friends, have downloaded the extension, you can begin watching movies and shows. Here’s how to get the party started:

  1. Open a new tab in Chrome and log in to Netflix.
  2. Pick the movie or show you want and click on it.
  3. The gray NP icon should now be red. Click the icon and select Start the Party.
  4. You will now become the host. You can either choose to be the only controller of pausing, fast-forwarding, and rewinding, or let anyone take over.
  5. Copy the URL from the pop-up box and send it to those you wish to invite.
  6. The chatroom will appear on the right side of the screen, and you’ll be able to see when others join.

In spite of its great TV and movie offerings, Hulu just isn't right for everyone. The streamer, which is now owned by Disney, is just one of many services available to consumers right now, and at some point, you have to start deciding which services you're actually going to use. Some streaming services are better than others and some streaming bundles such as the Disney+, ESPN, and Hulu bundle are better options for subscribers. If Hulu is just collecting a subscription fee every month for no reason then it might be time to cancel.

That's not to say that there's no quality content on Hulu, but there are plenty of options in the streaming game, and each separate streamer has hundreds of hours of content for its users to explore.

Although Disney came to the streaming game late, Disney+ has emerged as a viable streaming service. A Disney+ free trial gives you a glimpse into the successful content from the Marvel and Star Wars universes which made the platform popular. The Disney+ bundle offer packages ESPN+ and Hulu for one lower rate to subscribers. The bundle has made Disney+ even more attractive for some people who may not have otherwise subscribed. As the number of streaming services continues to increase, though, many consumers are going to have to make some tough choices about which ones are worth it and which ones aren't.

If, after careful evaluation, you decide that Disney+ isn't a streamer that you absolutely need, you can cancel your subscription. Actually canceling your subscription can be tricky, and it depends in part on how you initially signed up for the service. If you signed up through a browser, canceling is fairly straightforward. If you used the mobile app to sign up, though, things can get a little more complicated. The good news is that, even after you end your subscription, you'll still be able to use Disney+ until the end of your next billing cycle.
