Meet the Impressively Massive Mega Mule Cocktail

There are plenty of epic drinks out there. There are the cocktails made with activated charcoal that are as black as the night and so Insta-ready they practically come with a blue check as a garnish. There are craft creations that transport you back to childhood by reigniting everyone’s love for Willy Wonka (which are also Insta-ready, obviously). Maybe you think an epic drink is a classic cocktail like an Old Fashioned made perfectly. Or maybe an epic drink is epic because you could get drunk with it and use it to defend your person.

May we introduce to another epic drink: the Mega Mule, which you and literally every single one of your best friends (or nine strangers, no judgement) can indulge in thanks to the fine folks at PHD Terrace, a rooftop bar located at the Dream Hotel Midtown in New York City.

We’ll give you a second to take in this beast in all its boozy glory.

Beautiful, ain’t it?

In total, the Mega Mule is 164 ounces of amazing. You’re going to get about 60 percent of a bottle of Belvedere vodka, 3 ounces lime juice, and a bottle and a half of Owen’s All Natural Mule Mix. After all of that that makes its way into the beautiful (and massive) copper mug, it is then topped with lime and mint and served with enough metal straws to go around. When full, the Mega Mule weighs just over 10 pounds.

This behemoth will run you $185, but if you’re going out with friends, you’re going to make out like a bandit by sharing (that’s what Venmo is for, anyway). For what would be a little more than one cocktail, not only are you getting a damn good drink, but you get to enjoy it in a unique way with friends.

As a bonus, PHD Terrace also does a tequila version for those that have agave on the mind. Then, if you and your friends manage to make it through the Mega Mule, Dream Midtown has two more bars in the hotel as well: the craft cocktail bar The Rickey and the Fishbowl, a bar, lounge, and game room complete with a mini bowling alley and Skee-Ball. You can spend all night in one hotel and get three very different experiences. How can you beat that? Work smarter, not harder.

If you can’t make it to New York to try the Mega Mule, though, never fear. We’ve got you covered.  You can make your own Moscow Mules at home with these vodkas and these ginger beers. All you need to do is find your own massive

Moscow Mule mug

 and you’ll be set.

Bottomless portafilter vs. regular: Which one makes better espresso?
What makes each portafilter different?
espresso filter

One thing I love about brewing espresso is that it can be adjusted and adapted for any skill level. Whether you're a coffee nerd or a barista who wants to perfect every part of the brewing process, you can brew espresso. Regardless of your skill level, you need to learn about one of the most critical components of an espresso maker: the portafilter. You can't brew espresso without it -- unless you're using a capsule-style system like a Nespresso Veruto.

There are two types of portafilters that you can use with your espresso maker, yet neither is better than the other. Both the bottomless portafilter and a regular, spouted portafilter do the trick to brew delicious espresso. With this in mind, the winner of the bottomless portafilter vs. regular debate comes down to your preferences and how deeply invested you are in the art of brewing espresso. Here's what to know about each type of espresso filter.

Chef Robert Lopez spills the tea on how to make slow-cooked beef tips
Horses racing in the Kentucky Derby

When it comes to the Kentucky Derby, the spectacle isn’t just on the racetrack. The annual event is synonymous with Southern tradition, elegance, and indulgence, which makes it the perfect backdrop for a curated, high-end dining experience. Chef Robert Lopez, Senior Executive Chef at Levy Restaurants and Head Chef at Churchill Downs, has crafted a Derby-inspired menu that blends tradition with seasonal, locally sourced ingredients to capture the essence of this legendary horse racing event.

Lopez is known for his attention to detail and deep respect for classic Southern flavors, and he has carefully and thoughtfully selected dishes like the Bluegrass Fields Salad and drinks like the mint julep that evoke both comfort and refinement. You’re in for a treat, as we had the pleasure of speaking with the chef and picking his brain on how he selected these recipes for this year's menu. One of the most popular dishes that he has on there are the slow-cooked beef tips, and we were eager to learn not only how to make beef tips, but also how to do them the Kentucky Derby way.
