An SS14 catch-up with Common People

ss14 catch common people

We’re so impatient for summer; we want to talk to everyone about it all the time. So when we saw Scottish label Common People’s SS14 collection film, we knew we wanted to wax lyrical about outdoor roaming and their lightweight jackets, which just happen to be the colour of sunshine. Fortunately, the assistant designer Gail Ferguson indulged us.

What inspired the SS14 collection?

SS14 – “Summer Rambling Tales” reflects the essence of Scottish summer holidays, inspired by 1970s field trips and influences of Celtic art.

What will the Common People guy be up to this summer?

You’ll find him holidaying on the Isle of Skye and enjoying the Edinburgh Festival with family and friends hopefully getting some fly-fishing done, and relaxing with a cold beer in the sun.

There is a really nice lightweight, utility vibe running through the collection. What kind of fabrics did you use?

Outerwear pieces are key in the collection this summer. Fabrics range from shower-proof nylon/cotton memory fabric to colour-coated cottons, which are washed back to give an aged affect. Airtex linings give the collection a technical feel with both warmth and breathable properties. The Ambleside Jacket is a functional design, inspired by a 70s rambling smock. Made in the UK, the style features four front pockets and is fabricated in a pop yellow, Korean shape memory fabric, which is shower-proof. Perfect for the unpredictable British summer.

What triggered the colour palette?

The colour palette for SS14 was triggered by the 1970s vintage rambling inspiration and features bold pop colours such as burnt orange, yellow and apple green.

Tell us about the SS14 collection film.

Photographer Jonathan Daniel Pryce filmed ‘Summer Rambling Tales’ on the day of the shoot. The collection was shot on location in Scotland at Seacliff Beach, less than an hour outside of Edinburgh. The film tells the story of the collection in the context of a Scottish summer’s day, set to the track “what you building” by PET.

What is on your summer soundtrack?

London Grammar, Metromony, Temples, ESG, and bit of Fats Domino

Finally, do you have any exciting vacations planned this summer?

We’re off to Stockholm for a week in August for a friend’s wedding, which I’m really looking forward to.  August will also be fun in Edinburgh as it’s festival time and a great place to be.

St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland, kidnapped and brought to the island as an enslaved person at 16. He eventually escaped but returned later and is believed to have brought Christianity with him. One thousand years later, he is still celebrated on St. Patrick's Day, the accepted date of his death, March 17. And how do we celebrate it? By wearing the color green on St. Patrick's Day, of course. Wearing the color symbolizes the patriotism of the entire island.

Now, whether you are Irish or not, you can show your support for the island by donning green on St. Patty's Day. However, that doesn't mean you have to go all out and look like you jumped right off the box of Lucky Charms. Here are a few tips to help you celebrate the patron saint of Ireland without sacrificing looking fantastic.

Freezing jeans shouldn’t really be a thing — here’s why
Why you should stop putting your jeans in the freezer

Recently, I reached into a friend’s freezer for an ice sphere and came across a pair of neatly folded jeans. This sight took me by surprise not because it was unusual, but because the practice felt so dated. For those that might not have heard of the practice, the idea behind freezing your best jeans is that freezing denim kills bacteria from well-worn jeans without actually having to wash them and affect the fade or overall integrity of the denim.

When did freezing jeans become a thing?
Jeans have been around since 1871. These popular pants were invented by Jacob W. Davis and patented by Davis and Levi Strauss. Though people have anecdotally frozen their denim for years, more as an odor-removing process than anything else, Levi Strauss actually pushed this practice into the mainstream in 2011. In 2014, Levi Strauss' CEO Chip Bergh repeated longstanding advice from the jean company; don't wash your jeans, freeze them instead. Bergh's reminder was more of a conservation effort to get people to freeze their jeans to stretch out the time between washes.
