Teeling’s Exclusive Single Barrel Launching in the U.S.

Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, Teeling Whiskey is launching an exclusive Single Barrel in the U.S. Can we get an amen?

This series involves 12 individual casks of Irish Single Malt whiskey hand bottled just for us.

The 2016 U.S. Single Barrel release consists of 13-Year-Old Single Malt Irish whiskey distilled in 2002 and initially matured in ex-bourbon barrels for the first 12 years before being finished exclusively in ex-White Port barrels from the Carcavelos region of Portugal famous for its beautiful light fragrant fruity flavor.

Our friends at Teeling  are the first whiskey producer to ever use this type of White Port barrels to age whiskey and deliver a truly unique taste that works perfectly with the underlying taste characteristics of Irish whiskey. Each bottle of Single Malt is numbered, hand filled and bottled in its most natural form at cask/barrel strength.

Jack Teeling, founder of the Teeling Whiskey Company, told us that, “We are delighted to be able to release such unique and innovative expressions of Teeling whiskey in the U.S. for St. Patrick’s Day. In conjunction with some of the leading U.S. retailers we continue to drive the choice and breadth of offerings for Irish whiskey drinkers.”

Tasting Notes

This single barrel has a rich, warm mouthfeel with soft citrus fruits, vanilla, and prickly spice. Toasted wood and toffee notes finish this light, smooth, dry single malt.

What is Carcavelos White Port?

Carcavelos is a Portuguese wine region centered on the Carcavelos municipality in Estremadura region and includes land near the cities of Cascais and Oeiras. The region has Portugal’s highest wine classification as a Denominação de Origem Controlada (DOC). Located at the very southern tip of the Estremadura region, the region has a long winemaking history dating back to the 18th century when Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, Marquis of Pombal owned vineyards here. The region is known for its fortified wine production, creating off dry, topaz colored wines that have nutty aromas and flavors. While once a thriving wine region, world-renowned in the 19th century for its tawny colored fortified wine, in the modern era Carcavelos has been devastated by real estate development in the suburbs of the capital city of Lisbon and nearby coastal city of Estoril.

The Teeling Single Barrel retails for $85 and you can purchase it here.

Negra Modelo

For the first time in about a generation, the most popular beer in the states is not American. That's right, Bud Light has lost its place on the throne, replaced by the likes of Modelo Especial of Mexico. What can we deduce from this change in popular beers?

The margins are thin, and Budweiser may still win out in terms of total year sales, but this is still a significant storyline. A few things are unfolding here, which speak to larger themes that exist within the beverage industry and at large.
