8 Absolutely Essential Rum Cocktails for National Rum Day
Ahoy, avast, and other nautical terms! It’s National Rum Day, but that doesn’t mean you need to be a pirate to properly celebrate (in fact, as cool as it may sound, we advise against it—scurvy is no fun). We’ve pulled together a list of light, refreshing cocktails that will help you celebrate in style (even if you don’t have a tri-corner hat or a parrot). Before you do that, though, check out our list of rums that you should have stocked on your shelf, then get ready to have some fun.
Cruzan Black Diamond Swizzle

- 1 1/2 parts Cruzan Black Strap Rum
- 1/2 part Bitter Red Liqueur
- 3/4 part Fresh Lime Juice
- 1/2 part Simple Syrup
- 2 Fresh Strawberries
Method: Muddle two strawberries in the bottom of a Belgian beer glass with the red bitter liqueur and fill with cracked or crushed ice. Then, in a cocktail shaker combine fresh lime juice and simple syrup. Whip and shake with no ice. Pour lime juice and cane mixture over ice, and fill again as needed. Gently float Cruzan® Black Strap Rum on top. Garnish with berries and lime.
- 2 oz Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva
- 1/2 oz Amontillado sherry
- 1/2 oz lime
- 1/2 oz brown sugar simple syrup
Method: Place ingredients in order listed in a cocktail shaker over ice. Shake and serve in a martini glass or coupe.
Rum with a View
(Created and available at LeGrande at Time New York Hotel, New York)
- 2 parts Captain Morgan spiced rum
- Splash of Malibu rum
- 2 parts pineapple
- Splash of blue curacao
- Squeeze of lime juice
Method: mix all ingredients in a shaker with ice; shake vigorously and pour contents into white wine glass
- 2 oz. Jumbie Coconut Splash
- 1½ oz. Elderflower Liqueur
- Splash of Lime Juice
- 3 Strawberries
Method: Muddle two strawberries with a splash of water. In a shaker with ice, add liquids. Shake well, strain over fresh ice into a rocks glass. Garnish with remaining strawberry.
- 1 bunch fresh mint, stems discarded
- 2 limes, cut into 8 wedges
- ½ cup sugar
- 1 cup pineapple juice
- 1 cup canned crushed pineapple
- 1 cup Allaire rum
- 4 cups ice cubes
- 1 cup club soda
Method: Stir together pineapple juice, crushed pineapple, and rum. In four glasses, evenly distribute lime wedges, sugar, and mint then muddle together. Add ice, pour rum mixture over top and top with club soda.
Bacardí Citrus Party Punch
- 1 part Bacardí Grapefruit
- 1 part Bacardí Limon
- 2 parts Orange Juice
- 1 part Grapefruit Juice
- 4 Lime wedges
Method: Pour all ingredients into a serving glass filled with ice. Squeeze two lime wedges into drink. Stir with a bar spoon. Garnish with an orange slice.
- 2 parts Havana Club Añejo Blanco
- 1 part fresh lemon juice
- 1 part honey syrup
Method: Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker with Ice. Shake, and strain over a rocks glass filled with ice. Garnish with a lemon wedge.
