STAG comes to Venice

Here at The Manual, we’re big fans of STAG’s inaugural Austin store. So when we heard that the clothing and lifestyle brand has opened their second store in Venice, California, we were over the moon.

The 3500-square foot space is aptly located on Abbot Kinney Bvld. “We think STAG will be right at home on Abbot Kinney,” explains co-founder Don Weir. “We’ve been visiting Venice for years and discovered long ago that Abbot Kinney has a unique, laid-back sensibility that we really identify with.” Among their selection of ‘provisions’ for the contemporary gent, you’ll find an eclectic yet carefully edited selection of casual apparel from brands including Alex Mill, Ralph Lauren RRL and Faherty Brand, accessories, grooming essentials, original artwork, homewares and one-off vintage furniture. There is also a small offering of locally crated goods including eyewear by Vuarnet and MOSCOT. Essentially, everything you want to blow your pay cheque on, under one roof.

In the spirit of all-singing, all-dancing retail spaces, the open-plan store also houses a loft space for special events and collaborations.

Ultimately, co-founders Steve Shuck and Don Weir have succeeded in creating a retail destination that guys will want to hang out in – they wholeheartedly encourage their customers to stop in and share a beer with them. We recommend stopping by next time you’re in town for a t-shirt or perhaps, for a drink and a chat.

COACH-A New Level of Cool Again
coach new level of cool again radio bat ball

Back when Coach started, in 1941, it occupied a space on the west side of Manhattan, and made small leather goods.  It started with just six leather workers, making everything by hand, and the inspiration was the worn patina of a baseball mitt.
Widely recognized as a distinctly American brand with a long heritage of quality and craftsmanship, Coach began as a men’s company.  Now in today’s market place, Coach has again understood the importance of the men’s business. They are no longer just your girlfriend’s handbag brand.
In 2003, the Hudson Collection was introduced.  It was the first time they mixed materials, for a more casual look.  High-quality canvas was paired with Coach premium leather, to adapt to the change of a more laid back work place, happening across the country.  The men’s collection continued to grow and change, as did the male consumer.  Previously known for being  very ‘briefcase case formal’, and ‘traditionally conservative’, Coach opened it’s first men’s only freestanding store on Bleeker Street, in New York’s mega-booming West Village in 2010. That made the male consumer (and his girlfriend) do a triple take !
Today Coach is once again a cool name to banter around when discussing men’s fashion and accessories. They’ve continue to adapt to the ever changing tech savvy male consumers needs and wants,  from iPad and iPhone cases to water resistant zippered closured beach pouches.
Recently Coach teamed up with renowned American audio brand Tivoli to create this cool collectible limited edition radio: a compact, modern design wrapped in luxurious artisanal leather and equipped with the most cutting-edge technology. Let’s call it ‘minimalist baller’.
Speaking of, they also have the most ballin’ baseball collection with bats, balls and mitts, that harkens back to the initially inspired theme in 1941.
With five men’s only stores across the country, in additional to their men’s/women’s stores, and an intense offering on their website, Coach got with the program, and are bringing it, to the gentleman, stronger than ever.

A chat with the guys at STAG

In 2009, Steve Shuck and Don Weir were pissed off. The scarcity of menswear stores in Austin was at an all time low, and the pair struggled to identify any single destination that provided all manner of man stuff - accessories, gadgets, grooming, etcetera. Fortunately, their disgruntlement led to the birth of STAG, a modern-day general store/haven for men stocking everything from John Derian prints to vintage Lee jackets and Hammerpress stationery.

The Manual caught up with them one windy Thursday evening to talk essential provisions for the modern gentleman and weekend plans.

Chicago’s Newest Luxury Destination for Men: Zaharoff
a new store in town chicago zaharoff exterior

Adding to the amazingly rich and varied tradition of men’s stores in Chicago is Zaharoff.  Located on Oak Street, a powerful street with the finest specialty boutiques, is the flagship location for the brand.  Internationally renowned architect, Jordan Mozer, helped to transform the 6,000 square foot space to realize Zaharoff’s vision for a warm and inviting atmosphere complementing the unique lifestyle retail destination.

“The Zaharoff store is taking the men’s luxury clothing experience to a level not seen in a long time,” says George Zaharoff. “Retail is on the street level, and my atelier upstairs is connected by a grand staircase. We wanted to take the heritage and creative intimacy of the old European fashion houses—think Chanel and Dior —and combine that experience with the reach made possible through modern-day social media. 110 East Oak Street will be the heart of the House of Zaharoff.”
