The Car Gadget Every Guy Should Own

Got some spare Christmas cash burning a hole in your pocket? Spend it on an OBD2 dongle. Your car will thank you.

OBD2 is short for On-Board Diagnostics, version two. It’s a system that’s been built into just about every car made in the US since the mid 80’s, and it basically allows you to tap into your car’s on-board computer and get detailed information on what’s going on with it at any given moment.

Diagnostics ports have existed in cars for decades, but it wasn’t until recently that tapping into that information and making sense of it was really easy.

The Link from Automatic solves that problem. It definitely isn’t the first OBD2 dongle that’s ever been made, but it’s arguably the most sophisticated and user-friendly one we’ve ever encountered.

The device plugs into your OBD2 port just like any other dongle, but unlike others, it uses a low-power Bluetooth signal to wirelessly beam information to your smartphone in real time. This way you’ll always know exactly why your car is acting up, and then be able to address the problem before it gets worse.

If your check engine light pops on, Automatic immediately shoots a notification to your phone to explain what caused it. For simple problems, the app offers suggestions on how to resolve the issue yourself. For stuff that’s more complicated, it automatically tracks down well-reviewed mechanics in the surrounding area and offers directions. And to top it all off, the app even monitors your driving habits and suggests ways to boost your gas mileage.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a gearhead or completely clueless when it comes to cars – this thing is useful no matter who you are. You can pick up a Link for $100 bucks online, or just drop by the nearest Apple store to find one.

Flying subaru air mobility concept rear

The futuristic concept of flying cars has just inched another step closer to reality. Following on from Alef Aviation’s “Model A” gaining an airworthiness certificate earlier in 2023, a more well-known manufacturer has debuted its own flying vehicle concept. However, unlike the “Model A,” Subaru has eschewed traditional styling on its Air Mobility concept and instead opted for something that could best be described as looking like a large drone.

The flying vehicle was unveiled at the Japan Mobility Show in October and is apparently designed to help customers bypass gridlock traffic. It appears the vehicle will use six downward-facing propellers to take to the skies and maneuver itself.

Every Onewheel electric skateboard is being recalled (find out who just needs an update and who should ditch their board)
Future Motion recalls all 300,000 models of Onewheel electric skateboards.
Onewheel GT

Onewheel has become one of the most prominent skateboard brands out there, but before you head out today, there's something you should know. On September 29, 2023, Skateboarding company Future Motion recalled all 300,000 models of their Onewheel Self-Balancing Electric Skateboards due to a crash hazard. This turn of events was deemed necessary after several fatal accidents, as well as multiple injuries ranging from concussions to paralysis. If you or your loved one owns any model of Onewheel, here's everything you need to know.
Why is your Onewheel being recalled?
The recall stems from a huge technical glitch. Onewheel skateboards can stop balancing the rider if the boards' speed limits are exceeded, which poses a huge crash hazard that can result in serious injury or even death. Over the years, Future Motion received dozens of reports detailing harrowing incidents involving these electric skateboards, including four reported deaths that occurred between 2019 and 2021. Injuries such as traumatic brain injury, concussion, paralysis, upper-body fractures, lower-body fractures, and ligament damage have also been reported. Tragically, many of these incidents involved riders not wearing helmets or other kinds of personal protective equipment while riding.
