The end of the skiing season might be approaching fast for most of the US but that’s no reason not to squeeze in one or two last weekends of good snow – the very best of which can be found at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in Wyoming, renowned for its thrill seeking slopes. Seemingly wild and desolate, but also accessible as its served by plenty of seasonal flights to nearby Jackson town.
Family established, owned and operated since 1972, the Alpenhof Lodge in Teton Village prides itself on being the most authentically Bavarian guest house this side of the Atlantic – all the character of the Alps combined with all the might of the Tetons. It’s also the closest of the town’s hotels to the lifts; only a short walk away to the Bridger Gondola and the newer Aerial Tram.
The lodge is considerably cozier than some of the nearby resorts and out of its 42 guest rooms the Edelweiss and Jungfrau suites are undoubtedly the best, completely fitted out with hand crafted timber furniture whose woody scent lingers for decades. Other rooms with names like Tyrolean, Dolomite and Alpine are just as charming but somewhat smaller and lack the fun of having a real fireplace to warm your socks with.
Complimentary buffet breakfast aside the lodge has two great restaurants. The Alpenrose, which is more of a candlelight dinner affair, has already received the Wine Spectator Award and makes an earnest attempt at the most traditional of Swiss dishes; fondue chinoise (which enables you to cook your own meat cuts in broth with an assortment of accompaniments), cheesy raclette, rosti potatoes and apfel strudel are all on the menu. The Bistro is more casual and does the three S’s very nicely; salads, soups and sandwiches – as well as intense all chocolate fondues.
They cater properly to ones après ski needs at the Alpenhof with a well-heated outdoor pool, Jacuzzi and sauna plus a choice of massages at the spa, including Swedish and deep tissue, to relieve any aches and sores.
