TGIF Shopping: Handmade Filson Cowichan

Cowichan is to this Fall what Fair Isle was to last. Just in case you forgot about Fair Isle – it’s the Scottish knitting technique that uses colored yarn to create patterned garments. Cowichan is the bulkier – less reserved – Canadian brother. Cowichan’s patterns are usually bolder and feature animals and larger shapes. Cowichan originated when Europeans settled British Columbia influencing Cowichan tribes with knitting and wool harvesting techniques. More recently, brands like Filson are adding a modern take to the iconic Pacific Northwest staple.

Right now the Filson is offering limited seasonal Cowichan sweaters, scarves, and hats. Each limited edition item is hand-knit by actual members of the Cowichan Tribes of British Columbia (They are legit). The patterns are all unique to native Cowichan tribes. There are three sweater patterns for men including salmon, eagle and snowflake. They also offer matching scarf and hat patterns that include salmon, eagle, snowflake and deer. Thanks in no small part to social media, The Kentucky Derby has become more than a horse race, becoming a major annual fashion event.
