Worn Out Wednesday – Dan Rookwood

Understanding style is something we (hopefully) convey in a simple and straightforward way to you, our reader. We applaud others who do the same. One site we are especially fond of is MR PORTER.COM. The brands they sell range from classics such as Dunhill to new comers such as Thom Sweeney. They also carry stellar array of books, candles, carrying cases and grooming brands, all a click away from your desk!

Another awesome asset to MR PORTER is their weekly journal and bi-monthly broadsheet newspaper. They have always been a good read but we think there may be a boost to the excitement soon as their new US Editor just landed in New York. Dan Rookwood will be covering US content for both and as a former Style Director of Men’s Health in the UK, we know he has some good tricks under his tailored sleeve.

His expertise doesn’t end there. Dan is a columnist for the London Evening Standard’s ES magazine and for GQ Australia. He is also a contributor to The Rake and reviews boutique hotels for Mr and Mrs Smith.

Educated at Cambridge University and then at City University’s prestigious School of Journalism in London, Dan won both the National Union of Students Sports Writer of the Year and Cambridge University Journalist of the Year in 1999. Nice work Dan!

A favourite of street style photographers at the menswear fashion shows, Dan was recently featured in the UK’s Sunday Telegraph’s Stella magazine as one of four influential “fashion misters”. He has been described by Reiss as “one of the most respected voices in men’s fashion” and by ES as “the dapperest Dan in London”.

He is 35 and lives in Brooklyn with his wife, Sam, and their dog, Millie.

Here are his personal style go-tos:

Jeans: The Scandinavians have basically got denim sussed as far as I am concerned. I like Acne’s Roc slim-fit washed denim. French brand A.P.C. also do very simple selvedge denim. I like slim-fit indigo denim with minimal wash.

Shirts: For casual shirts Brooks Brothers button-down oxfords are a go-to,especially their non-iron cotton. So easy. For more formal occasions, I’m all about T&A – which stands for Turnbull & Asser, of course. Why – what were you thinking?

Pants: I thought you meant underwear at first. In which case I’d say Derek Rose boxer shorts. As for trousers, I wear J. Crew cords or Slowear slim-fit chinos. (Editor’s note: Thanks for making us feel like daft American’s Dan.)

Suits: I am exactly the same size as London tailor Luke Sweeney and so often borrow his suits on extended loan. But now that Thom Sweeney have started ready-to-wear, I can buy my own. The most recent addition to my rapidly expanding collection of suits is a Richard James Prince of Wales check.

Shoes: For shoes that feel as comfortable as slippers from the first time you wear them, try O’Keeffe. I have two pairs of their monk straps already and a pair of loafers on order. For eveningwear I like Church’s and for the weekend it’ll probably be a pair of Grenson’s Fred brogue boots or Redwing’s classic No875s. Or Valentino sneakers. I run in Nike Flyknits.

Accessories: I’m not a big hat wearer except on vacation when I’ll keep my cool under a Lock & Co straw panama. I wear a Bremont ALT-1 Classic watch – the co-founders Nick and Giles English are terrific guys. And I like Tod’s woven leather bracelets.

Outerwear: During the Polar Vortex I have scarcely removed my Woolrich arctic parka. Otherwise Burberry is my first port of call for coats – such as their timelessly classic gabardine trench or navy peacoat. When/if spring eventually arrives I shall be sporting a LOT78 bomber jacket.

Your favorite App: I am addicted to Instagram and am mid-way through my #100happydays at the moment @danrookwood. But as a new arrival in New York I am marveling at apps you guys probably take for granted such as Uber and Seamless. Also, I am heavily reliant on Spotify Premium and Nike+ Running.

Favorite piece of technology: I don’t go anywhere without my MacBook Air. I develop withdrawal symptoms if I am away from it for too long and I had it written into my contract that I can only work on Macs. I am very un-PC.

Next tech purchase: A mophie iPhone battery case for protection with extra power. I also need a new pair of running headphones so maybe these Bose ones?

Rolex’s latest white gold cosmograph Daytonas feature mother-of-pearl dials
Rolex adds new Cosmograph Daytona watches
Rolex Cosmograph Daytona

Rolex has introduced a new, super-expensive watch covered in diamonds. What's new? Well, while we're used to this, and it doesn't exactly warrant front-page news, this introduction actually does. This new chapter for the brand unveils two new additions to the Rolex Daytona collection, and they're certainly more opulent in a subtle way compared to previous designs.
Rolex Daytona: Two new Rolex Cosmograph Daytona watches added to the collection

These new Rolex watches, which are part of the Cosmograph Daytona collection, are diamond-set models adorned with mother-of-pearl dials.
