Get High and Watch Movies in PDX

If you happen to find yourself in Portland this summer, searching for something fun to do with a lady friend, don’t think too hard – we’ve got the perfect event for you.

Each year during the peak of summer, when the sun doesn’t dip below the westward horizon until your watch reaches double digits, the Hotel deLuxe throws quite the shindig. On the rooftop of it’s opulent hotel in downtown PDX, the hotel hosts a series of movies screenings known as Top Down Cinema.

We’ll be honest though – the rooftop of this place definitely doesn’t tower over the city. In reality, it’s just a few stories off the ground, but the height isn’t really an issue. It’s high enough off the ground to give you a that untouchable, on-top-of-the-world feeling, but not so high as to make you feel you’re somewhere elite and overly formal where you have to behave yourself  – it’s definitely a good place to let your hair down and get reckless.

Before the movie kicks off on the giant inflatable projection screen, you can wait for the sun to go down with some live music and a stiff drink. The deLuxe makes sure there’s plenty of microbrews and cocktails available to lubricate the event, and even brings in a band to play live music before the feature. This mixture off booze and tunes will inevitably make you forget why you’re here – you’ll think you’re at a rooftop concert, and then the movie feels like a bonus round you weren’t expecting.

And no need to worry about driving anywhere – spring for the hotel’s Top Down Cinema Sleepover package and you can just crash at the hotel afterwards. In addition to two event tickets with reserved seating, the package includes an overnight stay, a $25 food and beverage voucher, a Northwest Film Center hoodie; and valet parking.

This package is bookable July 25, August 1, August 8, August 15, August 22, and August 29 with rates beginning at $259. Check out the event website to learn more.

Travel tips: How to keep from getting sick on a crowded airplane
It all starts before your flight, too
A flight attendant checking on the inside of a cabin on an airplane.

Traveling by plane is a convenient and efficient way to reach your destination quickly this holiday season, but the confined space and recycled air can heighten your risk of getting sick. Catching a cold or the flu during a trip can put a damper on your plans and keep you from spending time with your loved ones. With a few proactive measures, you can significantly reduce the likelihood of falling ill while flying. These travel tips will help you to stay healthy and enjoy your journey without worrying about any airborne illnesses.

Pre-flight considerations
Preventing illness while you travel starts before you even step foot on the plane. You are much more likely to fall ill if you aren’t mentally and physically prepared for your journey.
Boost your immune system
Start preparing for your trip well in advance by adopting a healthy lifestyle. Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains is a great way to make sure your body is getting the vitamins it needs to thrive. Supplements such as vitamin D, vitamin C, and zinc are also great for boosting your immune system.
Hydrate hydrate hydrate
Airplane cabins are notoriously dry, and being dehydrated can quickly weaken your immune system. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water before, during, and after your flight. It is also a good idea to avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol consumption, as they can contribute to dehydration.
Rest up
Lack of sleep can compromise your immune system, making you more susceptible to illness. Make sure you are prioritizing sleep for a few days before your flight. This is especially important if you have a long or late-night flight where sleeping may not be possible.
