Lavva Plant-Based Yogurt Might Be Better Than the Real Thing

Necessity is indeed the mother of invention. Just ask Liz Fisher, a cancer survivor who healed with the help of supercharged nutrition. Seeking plant-based alternatives to her favorite foods led her to create Lavva, a rich, velvety yogurt substitute made entirely from plants.

Yes, plants.

Lavva not only matches (if not exceeds) the taste and texture of full-fat dairy yogurt, it also boasts an impressive 50 billion vegan probiotics per serving. Its secret ingredient is the Pili nut, a buttery rich tree nut that grows in nutrient-packed volcanic soil in Southeast Asia. Along with its creamy sweet flavor, the certified organic and fair trade Pili nuts in Lavva yogurt have an incredible nutritional profile, with the highest vitamin E and magnesium concentration of any nut on earth. Add in a kiss of lime for tartness, and fiber-rich cassava for creamy thickness, and you have all the best parts of yogurt with none of the negative effects of dairy.

Lavva yogurt eschews added sugar, opting instead for a natural sweetness that comes from coconut cream. Its velvety texture is boosted by the addition of young plantains, which offer the added benefit of gut-friendly probiotics. The result is an ultra-nutritious snack that brings delicious fruit flavor and extra rich texture without being overly sweet.

As for what you’re getting health-wise, in one 5.3-ounce serving of Original you’ll find 170 calories (130 from fat), 13 grams of fat (10 grams saturated fat), 11 grams of carbs, and 2 grams of protein.

We had the pleasure of taste testing all the flavors in the Lavva lineup. The standouts were Mango, Strawberry and Vanilla, whose natural fruit flavors floated sweetly over a subtle coconut bass note. (They also have Blueberry, Raspberry, and Pineapple.) The Original flavor was great on its own, but really shined as a topping for dishes both sweet and savory. (We stirred some Original into a homemade curry, which rounded out the whole dish and turned it into something truly special.)

Since launching in 2018, Lavva has become available nationwide. It’s Whole30-compliant, keto-friendly, vegan, and paleo, and contains nothing wacky along the lines of gums, stabilizers, colors, or other additives. It’s simply a five-ounce serving of delicious, creamy goodness that satisfies your cravings with honest nutrition.

The best añejo tequilas to prepare for Cinco de Mayo
Drin anejo tequila this Cinco de Mayo
Tequila shot with salt

When it comes to drinking holidays, there are two that stand out. The first is St. Patrick’s Day with its green beer, Irish whiskey, and dry Irish stouts. The second is Cinco de Mayo with its tequila and Mexican beer. While we honestly don’t know why we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, we do know that Cinco de Mayo is not a celebration of Mexico’s Independence Day (that’s in September). It’s the day to remember the Mexican victory over France in the Battle of Pueblo.

Over the years, to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, we’ve enjoyed our fair share of blanco tequila shots and light Mexican lagers. As we’ve grown, we’ve realized we prefer something with a little more complexity. That’s why this year we’re going to sip añejo tequilas instead.

Clams vs mussels: The differences explained
These two delicious ingredients are more different than you think
Seafood pasta

For whatever reason, shellfish has a rather high-maintenance reputation. Perhaps it's simply the lack of familiarity in many American households. Clams and mussels are indeed a delicious indulgence when dining out, but they are not necessarily a staple of weeknight dinners at home—at least, not necessarily in non-coastal states. Salmon or shrimp may be the fish that grace our tables on seafood night, but seldom mussels or clams. This may be because shellfish can be tricky and unfamiliar.

The truth is that both clams and mussels are impressive, delicious ingredients that are truly easy to prepare in a variety of ways. Whether steamed, broiled, baked, sauteed, or grilled, these beautifully briney little mollusks make for meals that feel elegant and sophisticated but with very little effort and usually a relatively small price tag. But what's the difference between these two shellfish, and how are they best used in your dishes at home?
