Akamai Personal Care: Earth Friendly Grooming Products We Love

No matter what news station you listen to, paper you read, or blog you browse, the environment is in heavy rotation. Dying coral reefs, Native lands in danger, and plastic bags being banned slowly but surely city by city.

All of this makes us think, what the hell are we slapping on our faces every morning? If you look on the back of your skin care products and it reads like a Dicken’s novel filled with scientific nonsense, you might want to rethink those products. We did. And since then, we have been enjoying the forward thinking and fresh products from Akamai.

As co-founder Vincent Cobb told us, “[Akamai’s] mission is to help men break free from the mainstream personal care paradigm that promotes too many products, chemicals and complexity – at a high cost to both our health, environment and wallets. We believe there is nothing normal about what has become “the norm.” He continues, “We make 100% natural, multipurpose, healthy, personal care essentials and deliver them via our subscription service. Clean and healthy teeth, skin, and hair can be achieved with much less fuss, far fewer products, and at a lower cost than we have been led to believe.”

Are you ready to jump on board this eco-friendly grooming party bus? Here’s how to start:

3 in 1 Bar

The soap is great for face, body, hair, and even for shaving. The light scent is isn’t going to knock you over in the morning and the size is great for travel and camping, too, since it is 100% biodegradable.

Skin Fuel

This may be our favorite product. It’s a great moisturizer and has a very light spicy scent. This is going to be our go-to during the hot summer months when we don’t want to use a heavy cream. It is also a good go to for a hair product. Just a little dab rubbed into your palms and smoothed over your hair adds shine, reduces fly-aways and won’t weigh you down.

Mineral Toothpaste

This one takes some getting used to, so get used to it. The gray color and clay-like consistency is because, well, it’s made with clay–Bentonite and Kaolin clay to be exact. But don’t worry, they have added sea salt, peppermint, cinnamon, tea tree, and clove for a great taste. The paste won’t foam (because it isn’t fake) and  it fights bad bacteria that can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath while reducing plaque and tartar.

Like some other delivery services, they will send you a new box every two months and you can tell them what you want more or less of.

What makes them even cooler is that they donate 1% of their sales to the Environmental Working Group to support their mission to educate and empower people to live healthier lives in a healthier environment.

Grooming Journals: Leo Chan’s No-Frills, Full-Proof Personal Care Routine
Leo Chan

Welcome to Grooming Journals, where we talk to men across the country about one of their most intimate daily investments: Grooming.

This week, Leo Chan takes us inside his efficient personal care regimen with our Style and Grooming Editor, Christian Gollayan. While the travel and menswear influencer is usually trekking across the world, Chan still manages to keep a hectic schedule in our new shelter-in-place reality, thanks to his menswear blog, Levitate Style, and his philanthropic fashion line, Wear for Humanity, which is directing all of its proceeds to nonprofits who are leading the fight against COVID-19. In the middle of all these projects, Chan will also lend his expertise as a panelist in our annual Grooming Awards, which will launch on July 8. Read on to learn more about his grooming routine.

One of the very first things people notice about us when they meet us is our hair. Whether you rock the bald look like Dwayne Johnson, the perfect quaff like Chris Evans, or the long flowing locks of Jason Mamoa, your hair sends a message.

However, no matter which hairstyle you like to sport, taking care of your hair is key to ensuring you always look and feel your best. That is why we here at The Manual spend tons of time testing and searching for the best in grooming products, culminating in the annual Grooming Awards.

Remember the good old days when we relied on a skincare regimen of soap and water? Maybe not, depending on how many candles were on your last birthday cake, but skincare was once as straightforward as that, especially for men. However, modern advances like gentle cleansers and moisturizers allowed deeper cleans and softer, smoother, and well-hydrated skin. Specific ingredients in these products also helped target or reduce the risk for common skin concerns, including acne and sun protection, while delaying signs of aging. These days, skincare has expanded, sometimes to luxurious-looking but rather complicated 12-step routines. Face serums often make these regimens and even more scaled-back ones.

What are serums, and do they belong in your routine?
