How to choose a steamer

  • Purpose: The most important factor to nail down when shopping for a garment steamer is how you’ll use it. Do you want something to throw in a suitcase to take on trips so you can quickly freshen and remove wrinkles from clothes while you travel? Then your needs are different from someone who wants to steam suits, dresses, and coats on a regular basis — or someone who wants to seam curtains, tablecloths, and napkins. The other factors below relate to different usage patterns, but even if you’ll never take a steamer out of your home, there’s no need for a garment steamer to be a big-budget item. Professional steamers that can withstand hours of daily use and even double as carpet cleaners can easily cost hundreds of dollars. Large units also use a lot of electricity to heat huge water reservoirs and can be cumbersome to move around.
  • Capacity: Measure steamer capacity two ways: The size of the water reservoir and the maximum running time, usually rated in minutes of continuous use. If you only want a steamer to touch up clothing before you head out, a travel steamer may be sufficient for use at home. If you foresee yourself steaming several garments each week for yourself and your family, consider investing a bit more (still under $100) for a steamer rated for 60 minutes or more of continuous steaming.  One factor to remember if you often find yourself rushing out the door to be on time is that steamers with large water reservoirs can take a lot longer to get up to steaming temperature than smaller-capacity models.
  • Portability: Consider size, weight, and convenience. It’s a lot easier to steam a sports jacket when it’s on a hanger or rack, but you won’t find travel steamers with integrated garment hanging accessories. You might give up a bit of convenience if you have to lay a garment out on a towel to steam it, but unwieldy steamers just don’t make it on trips.
  • Versatility: If you can think of other uses for your steamer aside from getting wrinkles out of clothes, look at one of the larger models, possibly a steamer that rolls on wheels. Larger-capacity models can handle a wide variety of cleaning tasks, including floors, windows, carpets, cars, bikes, boats, sports equipment, and more.
