The Kilbeggan Tailgater’s Toddy

It’s hard to believe, but autumn is staring us right in the face. And it seems like just yesterday that we at The Manual were telling you the right thing to throw on your grill for Labor Day. Now, the nights and mornings are getting cooler, the first sweaters of the season are being pulled on, and we’re already two weeks deep into football season!

Because football season is getting into full gear that means at some point you’ll be attending a tailgate party for your favorite team. You and your buddy may be tailgating with tickets in your pockets; you and a group of friends might be sitting in the stadium parking lot with camping chairs and a cooler; or, you could be sitting in your driveway, miles away from the game and pretending you’re there—either way, you are going to need something to drink.

That’s why we have to recommend the Kilbeggan Tailgater’s Toddy. As the weather gets colder, and you’re standing outside in your replica jersey and jeans, you won’t always want to reach for a beer; that’s where the Toddy comes in. Made with Kilbeggan Irish Whiskey (Ireland’s oldest distillery), a touch of DeKuyper Buttershots (one of the standards in butterscotch liqueur), some hot water, and a stick or two of cloves, this drink will warm you up and fill you with the team spirit you need to have a superior tailgating experience.

All you need to do is bring the water to a boil, mix in the whiskey and the butterscotch liqueur, throw in the cloves, and you are all set. You can bring this hot cocktail with you to the game, or concoct it in the parking lot when you’re grilling with your friends. Either way, it’ll be a crowd pleaser.

Now, with drink in hand, welcome the fall and enjoy your football.

A simple way to make your daily caffeine ritual more sustainable for Earth Day
Is matcha a more eco-friendly coffee alternative?
Matcha latte

Although we should all pay attention to sustainability year-round, Earth Day is a great time to reconsider our morning rituals and how they affect the environment. Many are unaware of the environmental harm that goes alongside our daily caffeine habits, from deforestation to soil depletion. One way to change your daily routine for a more sustainable one is to switch to matcha, a more sustainable alternative that offers the same energizing benefits as coffee -- without the environmental cost.

Unlike coffee, matcha is shade-grown, hand-harvested, and uses the entire tea leaf, minimizing waste and maximizing efficiency. But is matcha a sustainable alternative to coffee? Should you make the switch? I discussed these questions with Dr. Andrew Weil, a world-renowned leader and pioneer in integrative medicine, a healing-oriented approach encompassing body, mind, and spirit. Dr. Weil is the founder of Matcha.com and is internationally recognized for his expertise in healthy living and aging and his vision for the future of medicine and healthcare.

How to drink rum like a pro: Tips for savoring every sip
Your guide on how to taste rum like a professional
Rum in a glass

It might seem self-explanatory, but the way you drink your spirits is actually important. That is, if you actually want to get the most out of them. In my almost two decades of writing about alcohol, I’ve had my fair share of shots of whiskey, vodka, tequila, and even Brennivín (after choking down fermented shark in Iceland). And while there’s no disputing the fact that a shot helps you ingest alcohol at a remarkably fast rate of speed, there’s not much taste involved. That’s why, to truly enjoy hard liquor, you have to take your time with it.

And while I could write an article detailing the aspects of sampling bourbon, single malt Scotch whisky, mezcal, and any number of spirits, today it’s rum’s turn. I’m going to get to the bottom of how to drink rum and taste it. Keep reading to learn the tips and tricks you’ll need to get the most out of your favorite rum in terms of aroma and flavor.

Expert tips for every cut, from Picanha or Tomahawk
Fogo De Chao

With warmer weather and grilling season kicking off, Fogo De Chão's gaucho chefs say knowing how and where to cut meat makes a world of difference for maximum flavor and tenderness. These masters of churrasco are trained to slice, season, and grill every meat to perfection, from a ribeye to a tomahawk steak.

I interviewed Chef Antonio Iocchi, Senior Vice President of Global F&B Innovation at Fogo de Chão, to learn how to make steaks at home that rival the quality of the ones served at a Brazilian steakhouse. Antonio Iocchi joined Fogo in 2019 as Senior Vice President of Global Innovation where he leads food and beverage development. Chef Antonio has extensive large and small restaurant brand experience, having led culinary innovation at Romano’s Macaroni Grill, Zoës Kitchen, and Trilussa Trattoria. He also held prestigious executive chef roles in Rome, Italy, including at Michelin-rated Il Pianeta Terra after graduating from the Istituto Alberghiero di Roma, a professional culinary institute. Here's what he shared.
