The first edition was published in 1993, and helped solidify Hacker as one of the chief authorities on the subject. The newly released 4th edition, puffed to 400 pages, truly lives up to the title. In it, you’ll find a comprehensive history of cigars, quotes from famous smokers, spirit pairing suggestions, cigar smoking etiquette, and much, much more.

I had the pleasure of reading a lengthy excerpt, and was struck by the compelling prose. The history, culture, and technique of cigar smoking are themselves fascinating, and made especially engrossing by Hacker’s personal anecdotes and wit. Below, for example, is an excerpt detailing how to properly light a cigar.

All too often a smoker fails to rotate his cigar while puffing, thus lighting only half the cigar and consequently, providing only half the enjoyment. He then smokes away in pathetic oblivion, like a man who has forgotten to zip up his fly and is wondering what everyone is staring at.

Hacker’s paragraphs billow with knowledge as a fine cigar billows with sweet-smelling smoke. As he lays out each step of the cigar-smoking process — from cutting the head to disposing of the smoldering, thoroughly enjoyed cigar — he presents several options before humbly submitting his personal preference. While there are plenty of advanced tips for the seasoned smoker, the cigar novice will find the book easy — and enjoyable — to navigate.

As we're nearing the holidays and getting closer and closer to gift-giving season, I thought it would be a good idea to chat about cigars particularly, why you should probably avoid buying a box of cigars as a gift. Now, before we get into it, I should add that this will not apply to everyone. There are instances where giving your favorite cigar person a box of cigars would be a fantastic idea. If you decide to go through with it, good on you. It's always going to work best when you know the recipient well -- which is one of the reasons why I say avoid buying a box of cigars as a gift.

Nevertheless, it's a better option to buy a cigar sampler, pick out a few single cigars that you know the recipient likes, or just opt for cigar accessories to gift instead. Let's get into it.

I wanted to include the Hors D'Age on the list because it truly is a fantastic cigar, however, I've only been able to try it once. If I get another chance I'll definitely be adding it here.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, not much has been around as long as some cigar companies. La Aurora is the perfect example. As a company and a family company no less, it's been hand-making cigars since 1903. That's incredible. And after over 120 years of dedication to the craft you better believe they have some absolute bangers out there. From the Hors D'Age to the 120th Anniversary and the León Jimenes Prestige, let's just say there's a lot to talk about -- and a lot of La Aurora cigars to try.

Now, I'll have to admit, that even though I recently made a trip to La Aurora in the Dominican Republic, I wasn't able to try every single cigar the company makes. Instead, here are the best La Aurora cigars I've tried and tested this year. Let's cut off the cap and light up, shall we?
