Made In America: The Portland Collection

We love “Made in the USA” here at The Manual. And what’s more American than the pioneering brand Pendleton? It’s one of oldest family-owned clothing companies in the country. They’ve entered their sixth generation – going strong – while still making their own wool in Pacific Northwest. This season is no different. Using three new Native American-inspired patterns with a dash of modern Portland panache the buzz is on about The Portland Collection’s Fall 2013 line.  Oregon-based Rachel Turk, Nathaniel Crissman, and John Blasioli Timothy are the creative minds behind this seasons Pendleton line. The company has been making wool products, starting with wool blankets in 1895. They later launched men and women’s apparel lines. Their iconic remake of the wool shirt did away with dull greys by adding color and patterns helping the brand grow nationwide.

This Fall you’ll find wool sweaters, shirts and jackets inspired by the classic Pendleton archives, but cut and designed for the contemporary man. Fresh pieces include cotton shirts, pants and reversible vests that will integrate the brand’s signature wool, while adding diversity to the collection. Some standout pieces include the Hells Canyon Duffel Coat and any of the reversible vests with the Native American-inspired patterns. If you like the standard look, there are also vibrant solid pieces within the collection like the Bandon Pea Coat.  And they certainly didn’t skimp on the sharp accessories to go along including  duffle bags, scarves and ties with the newly-inspired patterns.

Stay tuned if you like this Fall 2013 collection because Pendleton has also announced a Spring 2014 line already in the works.

A day at the races: How to dress for the Kentucky Derby
Let your colors and patterns fly at the Kentucky Derby
Men's Derby Fashion with Bowties

Thanks in no small part to social media, The Kentucky Derby has become more than a horse race, becoming a major annual fashion event. Horse races have historically been social events that encouraged spectators to dawn their most spectacular finery going back to Victorian England. That tradition carried over to the States, and three races of the Triple Crown have been fashion events for America's upper class for well over a century. As a social engagement, the greatest of the three big races is The Kentucky Derby, and the greatest part of the race is the Kentucky Derby outfits. Churchill Downs Racetrack in Louisville, Kentucky, becomes the fashion capital of the South for one weekend every May.

The rise of social media and "fit" culture have led to a boom in Kentucky Derby parties across the country over the past ten years. An event that used to be a niche interest to horse racing and gambling enthusiasts, along with the few people wealthy enough to attend the event, has become a national fashion event. People who have no interest in horse racing and will probably not even watch the race (there are a number of races happening all day, culminating in the actual headline race) gather together over their shared love of dressing up and partying. It has become an occasion to be seen, both #IRL and on every social media platform.
