Feel Good Friday – WellPath

I am a big fan of custom anything. From custom suits, to cocktails, shoes and travel. So when WellPath reached out to me to customize my own nutritional supplement package I was all about it.

Launched recently in September of 2014, the brand is working to make taking vitamins a part of everyone’s daily routine and eliminating the piles of unused bottles of product we buy and then shove in the back of our bathroom drawers.

I simply went on the site, filled out my needs and a week later I had a months supply of vitamins in four weekly dispensers (we like how the founder relates them to advent calendars!) and a big bag of powder to put in my morning smoothie. Anyone who came into my kitchen bee lined to the packaging and my partner was perfectly pleased to have shared some of my morning smoothie with the Well Path Vanilla powder included.

We spoke with the founder, Colin Darretta, to hear more about this feel good product.

Tell us a bit about your background.

I came from a finance background and started doing investment banking, then hedge funds. I was always into fitness and wellness and I would proactively spend a lot of time self-educating about how I can help my body through food, supplements etc. It became something really powerful and I even alleviated knee pain I had for a lot of my life. I lost fat and added muscle to the point that it made a huge difference in my life. After a while I became a certified nutrition consultant to better understand this world.

I finally realized that there is a hugely underserved space for people who want to help themselves. I found that in a GNC, Whole Foods or Vitamin Shop, employees were often compensated by what product needed to be pushed. And some brands packaged a bunch of things into one vitamin for everyone that wasn’t exactly what we needed.

Some people have the economic wherewithal to see a nutritionist and that is a great way to get an extremely accurate program for you. But for those who can’t afford that, don’t have time for that, and are not getting a good customer experience at retail I wanted to develop something for them. Not to mention taking daily vitamins can be a hassle with five different ugly bottles on your counter. We wanted to simplify that.

I left my job in 2012 and wanted to do something in this wellness space. In 2013 I founded Well Path and in September of 2014 we launched.

There are A LOT of vitamins in my daily packet.

There are a handful of companies out there who do vitamin packets (not customized like ours). There are always eight vitamins in our packets. My plan is to charge the same amount as our competitors, $40-50 a month, and we will give you a lot more. 90% of people can benefit from the first four. But to take a few more you can get that much closer to the goals you have.

Why do I need the powder after swallowing eight pills?

They are designed to be complimentary. They both have a basis of getting your nutritional needs. Also, you can’t get fish oils in a powder format. Conversely, macronutrients like proteins, healthy fats and fiber can’t be delivered in a pill format.

Tell us about the packaging.

We are trying to do good for our Earth as well as our health! We find suppliers who are eco friendly and the pillbox in particular was highly focused on helping customers to remember to take their vitamins.

One of the biggest factors in people taking supplements is habit. They may get excited and take it for a couple of weeks then forget. Some of these you have to take for three to six weeks in order to get the benefits.

This pillbox can be thrown into your briefcase or gym bag or suitcase so you will remember when you need your next packet.

Where do the vitamins come from?

We stock over 100 supplements so we find suppliers who make the actual pill by either our specifications or brands that are up to our standards.

Then we fulfill your order in-house.

Be sure to check out their awesome smoothie recipes too.

Don’t ruin your cigars: here’s how to properly season a new humidor
Seasoning secrets every cigar lover could use
faceless man presenting a cigar humidor with cigars inside with gloved hands

If you're a newcomer to the world of cigars or just bought a brand-new humidor, you'll need to season it. And no, I'm not saying to add salt and pepper to it. If you've never heard of it, you might ask, "What is seasoning for a humidor?"

Don't think you need to flavor the box or anything — seasoning is really about getting the wood inside your humidor so as not to rob your cigars of precious moisture. Easy to understand, and getting it done is relatively straightforward as well. The trick is figuring out the "why," and we'll get into that in a bit. But let's first discuss seasoning a humidor.

The NBA’s ultimate celebration tool: The victory cigar
A look at the players and coaches who smoke to celebrate
Jordan smoking a cigar image on a bag

Sports are synonymous with celebration. After winning the biggest trophy of their lives, athletes want to indulge in the payoff that comes with seeing their dreams realized. Teams go into the locker room, where a waterfall of champagne hits them in the eyes, and swimming goggles seem to be a requirement, lest you walk around on the best night of your life half blind. While drinking is often the activity of choice after winning a championship, the NBA has an alternative symbol of greatness that other sports don't use nearly enough: the victory cigar.

Basketball is a team game, but it's also an individual canvas for solo superstardom. After winning an NBA championship, the coaches and players who sit atop the throne have long smoked a cigar in the locker room, during the parade, or even on the bench before the clock has hit zero. There's nothing quite like a good stogie to signify the ultimate win over the rest of the league, but how did the victory cigar get so ingrained in NBA championship celebrations? We want to take a walk down memory lane and look at some of the historical moments and people who made the cigar what it is within the NBA today.

The best medical shows of all time to binge now
From ER to The Pitt, these are the best medical shows ever made
Noah Wyle in the Pitt

Throughout TV's long history, the medical drama has occupied a somewhat unique place in the landscape. Medical shows are often some of the most reliable on TV precisely because there's so much drama built in to working in a hospital.

Personally, I've found the medical drama to be deeply comforting for years, even if I have no desire to be a doctor myself. Understanding the stress of people in the healthcare profession is fascinating in and of itself.
