This under-the-radar German brand just dropped a slick new dive watch

Hanhart pioneered the wrist chronograph and outfitted WWII pilots — its newest release is a serious diver with a helium escape valve.

Hanhart doesn’t get talked about nearly enough, so here’s a quick backstory: they’re a German brand out of Gütenbach in the Black Forest, they put the first single-button chronograph into series production back in 1938, and a year later they built pilot’s chronographs for the German Air Force. That red pusher button is still on their watches today.

That’s a real, foundational place in watchmaking history; it’s the kind of lore that other brands build entire marketing campaigns around. Somehow, Hanhart still flies under most people’s radar, but their new Aquasphere Matte Black is an argument that folks should be paying attention.

The 42mm stainless steel case has a fluted black bezel with a ceramic insert and a red marker. The bezel rotates counterclockwise only, which is actually a pretty galaxy-brain safety feature: if you accidentally bump the bezel, it’ll only ever read a longer dive time, never a shorter one.

The dial is matte black, with a silver-coloured rehaut (that’s the inner rim, fyi) and a red-tipped seconds hand. Hands, indices, and the bezel numerals are all coated in Super-LumiNova C1 GL X2 for visibility in low light or underwater.

Water resistance sits at 30 bar (30 ATM) and — because they’re not messing around — the watch carries a helium escape valve, which lets trapped helium gas release safely during decompression after time spent in a pressure chamber or on a saturation dive.

Depending on the production run, the movement will either be a Sellita SW 200-1 or a Soprod P024; they’re both Swiss-made automatics running at 28,800 vibrations per hour with hacking seconds and >38 hours of power.

A high standard

Hanhart’s own rate accuracy tolerance is 0 to +8 seconds a day, averaged across six positions, with no negative deviation in the main positions. That’s a tighter, more demanding standard than a lot of other watches wear as a badge of honor.

It also tracks with how Hanhart has approached its comeback in dive watches generally: no flashy branding push, just genuinely competitive specs — a helium escape valve, three strap options, and Swiss-made movements — on a watch most guys have never heard of.

Where to buy it

The Aquasphere Matte Black is available now in the US through WatchBuys, Hanhart’s exclusive North American distributor, priced at $1,870 on the Hook Strap, $2,060 on the rubber strap, and $2,170 on the steel bracelet.

Seiko’s newest 145th anniversary watches go all-in on purple
Wristwatch, Arm, Body Part

Seiko has unveiled its third and final 145th-anniversary series, a six-watch menagerie built around what the brand calls “Edo purple.”

The color dates back to Japan’s Edo period (1603-1868), when Tokyo was still known as Edo, and it’s been treated as a signature regional shade ever since.

Seiko’s new watch is a tiny tribute to a tinier Honda scooter
Wristwatch, Arm, Body Part

The folks at Seiko have a fun one on their hands: the 5 Sports Field x Honda MOTOCOMPO Limited Edition, a 36.4mm field watch built entirely around Honda’s cult “trunk bike.”

It’s a tribute to a weird Japanese cult scooter (more on that later), and the color scheme goes hard to match. A bright yellow dial cribs from the scooter’s original color, with a black band running across the center carrying the Honda logo — a nod to the MOTOCOMPO’s protective side bars.

Your summer shades are tired, it may be time for an upgrade with KREWE’s expert advice
Accessories, Sunglasses, Face

There are few things better than putting together a great look, checking yourself in the mirror, and then going for that perfect pair of sunglasses to slide on and complete the outfit. Your shades are the completion of a transformation from indoor to outdoor. They are functional in that they protect your eyes from the harmful rays of the sun. And they keep you from getting that annoying headache resulting from squinting all day. But they are also an amazing stylistic opportunity. They can become your statement piece; just ask Elton John if they are simply functional. But how do you select the right sunglasses to upgrade your collection? I was recently in the KREWE store down in the Meatpacking District and discovered that shopping for shades can be more than just scrolling online; it can be an experience unlike other shopping outings. After my experience in the store, I asked KREWE to spread the knowledge for shopping for new shades.

The best sunglasses are the ones you instinctively reach for day after day. But if your current pair is starting to feel a little too familiar, it may be time for an upgrade. – Kate McCabe, Vice President of Brand Marketing, KREWE
