The Oscars pre-cursors just keep coming, and the Best Picture lineup is beginning to solidify. The Critics Choice Awards, which are celebrating their 30th anniversary this year, announced their nominations on Dec. 12, and named three of their top categories live on Today. Wicked and Conclave were the day’s biggest winners, notching 11 nominations each. They were joined in the best picture field by Anora, A Complete Unknown, The Brutalist, Dune: Part 2, Emilia Perez, The Substance, Nickel Boys and Sing Sing.
The acting categories including a number of familiar faces, like Timothee Chalamet for A Complete Unknown and Ralph Fiennes for Conclave, but also featured the surprise inclusion of Huge grant for the horror movie Heretic. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo both got in for their performances in Wicked, and The Substance also did well, notching nominations for Demi Moore in lead and Margaret Qualley in supporting.
The CCAs also include a number of categories that don’t exist at the Oscars, including best ensemble and best young star. As an awards body, the CCAs are not always highly predictive of The Oscars, although the strength around a movie like The Substance is notable in part because of what it might signify about The Academy. That movie, which features some pretty gross practical effects and has a very particular tone, seems to be resonating with awards voters. The awards themselves will take place on Jan. 12, and will be broadcast on E!
