The scene across the river feels new and most importantly, refreshingly different from the decade-long pull of the East end (plus we love the accent). Block 336. When it comes to provocative modern art installations, this artist-run gallery never disappoints. Both established and emerging artists are given free reign of the 450 square meter space during exhibitions and the schedule is always packed full of intriguing shows.

The art scene in the South of the city is thriving right now. Hardcore art enthusiasts will love the South London Art Tour for a behind the scenes look at established and independent galleries in the area.

Casbah Records. Discerning record collectors from across the city have this Greenwich-based store earmarked for their awesome selection of records that span genres both mainstream and obscure, including Psych, Garage, 60s/70s soul and surf. You can also find new releases and rare re-issues too. In addition to records, the store holds a small but kick-ass selection of vintage clothing.

Sodo pizza Café’s second outpost in Honor Oak Park. This may seem like a bit of a pilgrimage, but once you taste the pizza, we guarantee the train journey will seem absolutely worthwhile. All pizzas are made using delicious sour dough and the combinations of toppings are ingenious. Our fave is the Winter Goat; goats cheese, olives, carmelised onions and walnuts. The selection of craft beers is bound to impress.

Royal Albert

The Royal Albert in New Cross. This friendly, delightfully traditional boozer has been serving pints since Victorian times. The bustling waterhole has a great rotating beer selection, which includes London’s finest Kernel Brown Ale. On weekend nights you might be lucky enough to catch one of the infamous theme nights. Expect anything from disco funk to gypsy swing jazz quartets.
