For some time now, Londoners have been redirecting their nights out, market wandering and gallery traipsing to the South of the city. The scene across the river feels new and most importantly, refreshingly different from the decade-long pull of the East end (plus we love the accent). If you’re planning a Blighty trip in the near future, make follow our recommendations and make the South your stomping ground.

Block 336. When it comes to provocative modern art installations, this artist-run gallery never disappoints. Both established and emerging artists are given free reign of the 450 square meter space during exhibitions and the schedule is always packed full of intriguing shows.

The art scene in the South of the city is thriving right now. Hardcore art enthusiasts will love the South London Art Tour for a behind the scenes look at established and independent galleries in the area.

Casbah Records. Discerning record collectors from across the city have this Greenwich-based store earmarked for their awesome selection of records that span genres both mainstream and obscure, including Psych, Garage, 60s/70s soul and surf. You can also find new releases and rare re-issues too. In addition to records, the store holds a small but kick-ass selection of vintage clothing.

SODO

Sodo pizza Café’s second outpost in Honor Oak Park. This may seem like a bit of a pilgrimage, but once you taste the pizza, we guarantee the train journey will seem absolutely worthwhile. All pizzas are made using delicious sour dough and the combinations of toppings are ingenious. Our fave is the Winter Goat; goats cheese, olives, carmelised onions and walnuts. The selection of craft beers is bound to impress.

The Royal Albert in New Cross. This friendly, delightfully traditional boozer has been serving pints since Victorian times. The bustling waterhole has a great rotating beer selection, which includes London’s finest Kernel Brown Ale. On weekend nights you might be lucky enough to catch one of the infamous theme nights. Expect anything from disco funk to gypsy swing jazz quartets.

CitizenM hotel Bankside. The colourful, slightly whacky design of the hotel is a breath of fresh air- we love the solid presence of Union Jacks, 1960s design chairs and bold contemporary art. Each of the 192 rooms has been designed to be a modern haven. Techno freaks will love the free wi-fi and complimentary range of movies on demand and Skype on tap.

Check out these travel tips for making the most out of your adventures while staying within your budget and avoiding unnecessary purchases.
Fragile items

Refraining from purchasing fragile items on vacation is a smart decision for several reasons. Firstly, the rigors of travel, including packing and transportation, increase the likelihood of fragile items being broken or damaged. Fragile souvenirs like glassware and ceramics aren’t likely to make it to your final destination in one piece, especially if they are in your checked baggage.

When planning a trip, you have a wide palette to pick from. Maybe you want to warm up by the ocean in Tulum, Mexico. Picture pristine turquoise waters stretching as far as the eye can see, surrounded by lush greenery and white sandy beaches. This luxurious scene isn’t just a dream reserved for far-off destinations like the Maldives.
