The island of Barbados and the island of St. Lucia are situated only about 130 miles apart, yet these two islands have a distinctly different feel. St. Lucia is located northwest of Barbados, featuring a mountainous terrain, lush rainforests, and a relaxing island atmosphere. While Barbados also has a laid-back island vibe, this island is better known for its white sand beaches and more developed infrastructure, with lots of great spots for dining and nightlife.
I’ve visited both of these beautiful islands and loved them both, yet I believe that each island may be better suited for a specific type of traveler. Barbados is the perfect island to visit when you’re looking for an active island vacation. Unlike other Caribbean islands, which require car transportation to visit many top attractions, Barbados’ walkability makes getting around much easier. This means you can walk off your resort and explore local beaches, restaurants, and bars without relying on an Uber or rental car. If walkability is an important factor for your vacation, I recommend staying in the Bridgetown area.
From Bridgetown hotels, tourists can explore popular beaches like Pebbles Beach, Drill Hall Beach, the George Washington House, and the Richard Haynes Boardwalk area. During my visit, I loved being able to roam easily off the hotel grounds, exploring local fish cutter stands, bars, and shops.
This gives you a more “authentic” island vibe, giving you a taste for the island itself as opposed to only staying on your hotel’s property. When you do need to drive somewhere, such as to check out the Harrison’s Eco Adventure Caves, the roads are flatter and more developed than some other Caribbean islands like St. Lucia (which is helpful if you get car sick like me). The best time to visit Barbados is in the dry season (from around mid-December to mid-April). However, I visited in late November and the weather was perfect.

- Beachgoers: Barbados is an excellent island vacation spot for those true “beachgoers” seeking white-sand beaches and calm, turquoise waters. If you plan on spending a lot of time on the beach and exploring water sports, you’ll love the miles and miles of beautiful beaches in Barbados.
- Nightlife enthusiasts: If you’re seeking a lively nighttime atmosphere, Barbados offers plenty of great bars to visit and spots to enjoy live music. Walkability comes in handy here. I also recommend checking out Worthing Square for nightly shows, food trucks, and entertainment.
- Explorers: Barbados is a smart choice for travelers who like to roam and explore, given its more walkable nature.
Features of St. Lucia
Travelers everywhere can recognize St. Lucia from photos alone, known for its dramatic Piton mountains, which set a beautiful landscape that sets it apart from other islands in the region. This island attracts all kinds of travelers, recently gaining traction as a honeymoon destination and a spot for outdoor activities like hiking and ziplining. The best time to visit St. Lucia is between December and May. I visited in early December and found the weather to be optimal.
For travelers who enjoy outdoor activities, there’s so much to explore in this stunning island, such as the drive-in Sulphur Springs volcano and the waterfall hikes throughout the rainforest. I also loved the Taste of St. Lucia cooking class, a great option for foodie travelers who love to explore new cuisines. While the landscape of St. Lucia is breathtaking, the mountainous terrain of this island makes getting around a bit trickier, with windy, bumpy roads and long distances between attractions.
Who should visit St. Lucia?
- Outdoor adventurers: Travelers looking for activities such as hikes, ziplining, snorkeling, and kayaking will love St. Lucia.
- Honeymooners and luxury travelers: St. Lucia has some exceptional all-inclusive resorts, honeymoon resorts, and luxury resorts such as the popular Jade Mountain Resort.
- Quiet travelers: St. Lucia has a laid-back, quiet atmosphere perfect for a relaxing island getaway.
Deciding between Barbados vs. St. Lucia
Deciding between Barbados vs. St. Lucia as your next island destination can be tough. For “diverse” travelers like me, both destinations offer plenty to do and explore, each with its own set of advantages. In a perfect world, I’d recommend visiting both in the same trip, as these two islands are only a quick 45-minute flight apart. However, if you’re choosing just one island for your trip, I recommend carefully considering the type of vacation experience you’re looking for and your travel priorities.
Overall, I’d recommend Barbados as an island destination for those looking for a more well-rounded vacation with more options for exploration, dining, and nightlife. I’d also recommend Barbados for those who want a true beach vacation. On the other hand, St. Lucia is a better choice for travelers who want scenic views with more outdoor adventure activities, such as steep hikes up dramatic mountains and exploring stunning waterfalls. For the traveler who prefers to stay put at one resort for the duration of their trip, St. Lucia also offers a great spot for honeymooners and those seeking quiet travel as opposed to a more lively nightlife experience.
